Since the beginning of 2020, due to the COVID-2019 pandemic, life has shifted almost entirely to the Web — people worldwide are now working, studying, shopping, and having fun online like never before. This is reflected in the goals of recent DDoS attacks, with the most targeted resources in Q1 being websites of medical organizations, delivery services, and gaming and educational platforms.
Quarter trends
This quarter has been dominated by the coronavirus pandemic, which has shaken up many things in the world, including the DDoS market. Contrary to our forecast in the last report, in Q1 2020 we observed a significant increase in both the quantity and quality of DDoS attacks.

The number of attacks doubled against the previous reporting period, and by 80% against Q1 2019. The attacks also became longer: we observed a clear rise in both the average and maximum duration. The first quarter of every year sees a certain spike in DDoS activity, but we did not expect this kind of surge.

Conclusion
Q1 2020 did not bring any major shocks. The TOP 10 countries by number of C&C servers welcomed two new entries (Croatia and Singapore) and saw the return of two familiar faces (Romania and Germany). Although we observed some growth in Windows botnets and ICMP floods, this did not significantly affect the overall picture

In the first quarter of 2020, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks jumped more than 542% compared with the last quarter of 2019 and more than 278% year-over-year. NexusGuard researchers suggest the spike may be linked to a parallel increase in malicious cyber activity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to traditional DDoS attacks, NexusGuard researchers detected abnormal traffic patterns from ISPs such as traffic generated from infected devices, and traffic generated by exploiting open resolvers (DNS, DLAP, etc.) to create small, short attacks they call "invisible killers." ISPs often overlook these threats, the researchers explain in a new DDoS threat report.
Ninety percent of attacks used a single-vector approach, a shift from the multivector attacks commonly used in the past.

Not just one but two new DDoS amplification methods were discovered last quarter. In mid-May, Israeli researchers reported a new DNS server vulnerability that lurks in the DNS delegation process. The vulnerability exploitation scheme was dubbed “NXNSAttack”.
About a week later, Chinese researchers posted information about another DDoS amplification method, named RangeAmp.

As researchers investigate these new ways of amplifying attacks, DDoS botnet owners look for new resources to expand them. In June, our colleagues at Trend Micro discovered that the Kaiji and XORDDoS malicious programs, which formerly specialized in IoT devices, were targeting unprotected Docker servers.

The second quarter of 2020 is notable for the number of DDoS attacks: the period from April through June normally sees a lull, but this year, DDoS activity increased in comparison to the previous reporting period. This is most likely due to the coronavirus pandemic and restrictive measures that lasted for part or all of the quarter in many countries.

The proportion of all types of DDoS attacks, except for SYN and ICMP flood, dropped markedly, but talking about any kind of trend in this regard would be premature.

The second quarter of 2020 has seen a massive 570 percent increase in 'bit-and-piece' DDoS attacks compared to the same period last year, according to the latest threat report from Nexusguard.

Bit-and-piece attacks target ASN-level communication service provider (CSP) networks by dispersing small pieces of junk traffic across a diverse pool of IP addresses across hundreds of IP prefixes.
Nexusguard analysts witnessed attacks using small sizes -- more than 51 percent of bit-and-piece attacks were smaller than 30Mbps -- to force CSPs to subject entire networks of traffic to risk mitigation.

"Cyber attackers have rewritten their battlefield playbooks and craftily optimized their resources so that they can sustain longer, more persistent attacks. Companies must look to deep learning in their approaches if they hope to match the sophistication and complexity needed to effectively stop these advanced threats."

The last quarter of 2020 has seen a wave of web application attacks which have used ransom letters to target businesses across a number of industries.

According to research from Akamai, the largest of these attacks sent over 200Gbps of traffic at their targets as part of a sustained campaign of higher Bits Per Second (BPS) and Packets Per Second (PPS) than similar attacks had displayed a few weeks prior.

“Prior to August, the signal vectors had been primarily used to target the gaming industry,” the company claimed. “Starting in August, these attacks abruptly swung to financial organizations, and later in the cycle, multiple other verticals.”
Meeus also said there had been a 200% increase in attacks against web application firewalls, which he was quite surprised by.

There were no headline innovations, although cybercriminals did continue to master techniques and develop malware already familiar to us from the last reporting period. For example, another DDoS botnet joined in the assault on Docker environments. The perpetrators infiltrated the target server, created an infected container, and placed in it the Kaiten bot (also known as Tsunami), paired with a cryptominer.

Although ransomware has dominated 2020's cyber threat landscape, DDoS attacks haven’t gone away. In fact the year has seen the largest DDoS attack ever recorded, peaking at 2.3 Terabytes per second.

The attack was carried out by deploying hijacked CLDAP (Connection-less Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) web servers and caused three days of downtime for the unnamed targeted business. This is one of the things highlighted in new analysis from Digital Shadows.

"The digitization of society has inherently increased cyber risks across all geographies and industries. Most notably, the Internet of Things has exponentially grown over the past few years, and cybercriminals are looking to leverage its increased attack surface and double down on users' unfamiliarity with proper security hygiene."
There's also been a rise in DDoS-as-a-Service offerings on cybercriminal forums.
