A data breach at Total Quality Logistics has compromised security for carriers and customers.

According to a company statement, TQL believes hackers gained access to some carriers’ tax ID numbers, bank account numbers and in some cases, Social Security numbers.
Customer information that may have been exposed only includes email addresses, names, phone numbers and customer ID numbers, according to the company.

“We have taken immediate steps to close security gaps in our systems, hired a third-party cybersecurity firm for additional forensics and testing to confirm the adequacy of our security protocols, and we’re actively working with law enforcement to investigate this breach.”

We confirmed a data breach of our IT systems which compromised the security of our online portals for carriers.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On Sunday, February 23, 2020, we confirmed a data breach of our IT systems which compromised the security of our online portals for carriers. We know the hackers gained access to information in some of our carrier accounts, including, in many instances, tax ID numbers and bank account numbers.

We are still gathering details, but it appears it was initially an information/data phishing attempt. Our IT security teams identified the issue quickly and countered immediately to secure all online information. We’re confident any access the hackers had to TQL’s systems has since been blocked.

Tom Millikin, corporate communications manager of TQL, told FreightWaves the data breach was not a malware or ransomware attack.

“Our internal response to this incident was swift,” he told FreightWaves in a statement. “We’ve been working diligently to assess the scope of the data breach and determine who may have been impacted. As soon as we knew the precise data involved, we identified the required resources and shared that information with carriers and customers.”
Millikin said he isn’t sure of the exact number of carriers who may have been affected by the security breach in its IT system, but is working with law enforcement and a cybersecurity firm to identify which carriers and customers may be impacted.

Carriers were notified early on Feb. 27 that external hackers had breached TQL’s IT systems and may have gained access to some carriers’ “tax ID number, bank account numbers and invoice information, including amounts and dates,” according to an email sent to carriers by Kerry Bryne, president of TQL.

A trucking company has filed a lawsuit against Total Quality Logistics (TQL) over its recent data breach, alleging the company was negligent after hackers attacked its computer systems in February.

Newman, of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, seeks certification of the complaint as a class action, which would allow other motor carriers to join the suit against TQL because of the data breach. He is represented by The Kerger Law Firm in Toledo, Ohio.
TQL is one of the largest privately held freight brokerage firms in the country, reporting annual revenue of around $3.6 billion.

“We don’t comment on pending legal matters,” Tom Millikin, corporate communications manager of TQL, told FreightWaves on Saturday.
Newman claims in the suit that his was among the carriers that received an email from TQL President Kerry Byrne, stating that “hackers may have gained access to carriers’ tax ID numbers, bank account numbers and invoice information, including amounts and dates.”
