    Hi.
I was not a fan of the Gnome desktop until I try the dash-to-panel extension.
    Great stuff!
I also installed the Google extension to check my Gmail inbox.
I was not able to get some icon on the panel that would tell me the message count or, better, the list of messages in my Gmail inbox.
Maybe in the "past" this was managed by the gnome message tray, I'm not sure.
I'm really a novice when it comes to Gnome DE. :)

Thanks in advance for the help!

There is a ‘New Mail Indicator’ shell extension for Gnome supporting several clients but it won’t give you a message count.

    https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1505/new-mail-indicator/

I’m not a Gnome user or fan of but there is a working new mail indicator with count for Thunderbird providing you also have Docky installed.

    https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/docky-unread-count/

There is also Birdtray for Thunderbird.

Previously the best addon for Thunderbird was FireTray but this no longer works. You can however still run FossaMail and it will work with that on various Linux desktops (but not Gnome) with varying degrees of success depending on the individual distro. I’m a KDE user and with some distros I get the full monty message count but others just a new mail tray indicator.

FossaMail comes from the PaleMoon developers but be aware the project (and that of FireTray) are now discontinued and no longer maintained. There was talk of FossaMail being reborn at one point but I don’t think this got anywhere. This combination works well enough for me however using Q4OS with either the KDE5 or Trinity desktop.

On some dsitros you might also need the minimize to tray addon because FireTray won’t trigger this action on its own.

There may well be message counters for other clients but if so not of my knowledge.

Thanks, I’ll check that one out!
I’m no longer using an email client, I use my web browser or my iPad.

That extension needs an email client running. :(
