"Federal authorities are investigating a cyberattack on the city of Pensacola, Florida, home to the naval air station where a Saudi flight student killed three sailors and wounded eight others on Friday... cyberattack.

'I can confirm the city of Pensacola has experienced a cyberattack and we've disconnected much of our city's network until the issue can be resolved,' said the city's spokeswoman, Kaycee Lagarde.

Maze Ransomware Behind Pensacola Cyberattack, $1M Ransom Demand

The operators behind the Maze Ransomware have claimed responsibility for the cyberattack affecting the City of Pensacola, Florida, but state that they are not affiliated with the recent shooting at NAS Pensacola.

In an email conversation with BleepingComputer, the operators of the Maze Ransomware stated that they were responsible for encrypting the city's data and have demanded a $1,000,000 ransom for a decryptor.
When Maze targets a network, they will steal the victim's files before they are encrypted. The attackers then tell the victim that they will publicly release these files unless the ransom is paid.

Without our prompting, the Maze Ransomware operators expressed concerns about being linked to the recent NAS Pensacola shooting and told BleepingComputer that they had nothing to do with it.

City Recovering
When we attempted to confirm if the information provided by Maze is accurate, Kaycee Lagarde, Public Information Officer for the City of Pensacola, told BleepingComputer that due to ongoing investigations they could not provide additional details.

Lagarde did tell us that the city is slowly recovering and that their mail servers are back up and that most landlines have been restored. Employees, though, continue to be unable to access their computers or the Internet until all of the issues are resolved.

Pensacola Hires Deloitte to Investigate Extent of Cyberattack

Though Pensacola has mostly recovered since it was struck by ransomware two weeks ago, the Florida city has hired the professional services firm Deloitte to investigate the source and extent of the attack, officials say.

Officials paid the firm $140,000 to assess how the attack occurred, whether any of the malware is lingering in the city's network and if any data was compromised during the incident, said Kaycee Lagarde, public information officer for the city, speaking with Government Technology.
It's unclear how long the firm will take to conduct its work, though Lagarde said that the city was interested in the results "as quickly as possible."

"City services have mostly been restored," said Mayor Grover C. Robinson Monday during his weekly press conference, explaining that many of the departments and capabilities that had been affected — including online bill pay, phone lines and Internet — are back to normal.

"We are operational at this point. There may be certain departments [where] tech resources is still connecting individual computers to the network. But overall we are operational. Every department is functioning," said Lagarde.

Maze Ransomware Releases Files Stolen from City of Pensacola

The actors behind the Maze Ransomware have released 2GB of files that were allegedly stolen from the City of Pensacola during their ransomware attack.
Earlier this month, the City of Pensacola was hit with a ransomware attack that impacted the city's email service, some phone service, and caused them to shut down their computer systems.

In a discussion with BleepingComputer, the Maze actors stated that they released the stolen data to prove to the media that they steal more than just a few files during a ransomware attack.

"This the fault of mass media who writes that we don't exfiltrate data more than a few files. We did not want to make a pressure on city, we still dont make it right now. We've shown that our intentions are real."
BleepingComputer has also contacted the City of Pensacola, but have not heard back as of yet.

Florida City to Pay for ID Monitoring for 60K After Cyberattack

A Florida city is offering to pay for identity protection monitoring for up to 60,000 people following a cyberattack that crippled Pensacola’s computer systems for days.

The News Journal reports Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson said he made the decision after talks with Deloitte, the international professional services company hired to audit the city’s cybersecurity issues in the wake of the attack.
Robinson said the city had no evidence that anyone’s personal information was compromised, but said the city would notify people because he believed it was the right thing to do.

Robinson said the city will send out notifications to those who may have had data their data breached.
