Data breaches ‘decrease by a third’ in first six months of 2020 – report

The number of data breaches decreased by 33% in the first six months of 2020, compared to the same period in 2019.

This is according to a new report from the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), a US non-profit, which noted that there were 540 publicly reported breaches from January 1 to June 30.
Analysis (PDF) from the consumer education organization shows that in the first half of 2019 there were 811 data breaches.

There was also a 66% year-on-year drop in the number of individuals impacted by data breaches. In the first half of 2020 there were just over 163.5 million victims, said the ITRC – much lower than 493 million a year earlier.

The report also states that attacks by external actors are still the most common cause data breaches, before adding that “compromises caused by internal threat actors are at a three-year low as more people work from home and have less access to internal systems and data”.

In fact, this year is likely to see the lowest numbers of data breaches and exposures since 2015.

“This is not expected to be a long-term trend as threat actors are likely to return to more traditional attack patterns to replace and update identity information needed to commit future identity and financial crimes,” the report adds.

Double Extortion
Ransomware actors have adopted a new strategy; in addition to making the victim’s files inaccessible, they now exfiltrate large quantities of data prior to its encryption in the final stage of the attack. Victims who refuse payment demands find their most sensitive data publicly displayed on dedicated websites.
Cyber Warfare Nation-state cyber activity has seen a surge in intensity and escalation in severity.
Mobile
Threat actors have been seeking new infection vectors in the mobile world, changing and improving their techniques to avoid detection in places such as the official application stores.
Cloud
Industries were required to make rapid infrastructure adjustments to secure their production when working remotely. In many cases, this would not have been possible without cloud technologies. However, it also exposed more misconfigured or simply unprotected assets to the internet.

We saw COVID-19 related phishing and malware attacks increase dramatically from a few thousand per week in February, to over 200,000 per week in late April. In May and June, as countries started to ease lockdowns, threat actors also stepped up their non-COVID related activities, with a 34% increase in all types of attack at the end of June compared to April.

Globally, the most common form of attacks continues to be cryptominers, rising slightly to 22% compared to 21% in 2019, followed by mobile malware and botnet attacks at 18% and 18% respectively.
