More than a third of the 424 software programs used by the city have been thrown offline or partially disabled in the incident, Atlanta Information Management head Daphne Rackley said. Nearly 30 percent of the affected applications are considered “mission critical,” affecting core city services, including police and courts...

Top city officials are still discovering the extent of the ransomware incident, in which hackers demanded $51,000 worth of bitcoin for the release of encrypted city data. Atlanta has said it did not pay the ransom..."

The way that southern city functions or has been reliant on strictly digital systems is atrocious. I know for a fact that there are very competent computer (or used to be) groups/business in the SOUTH! but when tax money is tossed "AT" something on that level with no real serious vetting (which would include proactive consciousness of World Pc Events) and/or no provisions in place to fallback instantly in event of such a strong invasion/interruption, the unintended consequences can be numbing. Dunno, someone tell me.

It paid the ransom, but a few days later, CEO Steve Long reported, "Though the electronic medical record backup files had not been touched, the core components of the backup files from all other systems had been purposefully and permanently corrupted by the hackers."

The Atlanta City Council is preparing to vote on the fiscal budget 2019, and must do so by the end of the month. It has now been told by Rackley that her department is likely to require an additional $9.5 million over the coming year because of the ransomware.

"Atlanta is now just another case study on what best practices need to be in place to protect an organization's CyberPosture," comments Mukul Kumar, CISO and VP of cyber practice at Cavirin.
The cost of prevention is inevitably less than the cost of cure.

Wi-Fi phishing attacks discovered around Atlanta City Hall

As Atlanta continues to fully recover from March’s ransomware attack, new evidence discovered today by Coronet reveals hundreds of active Wi-Fi phishing attacks currently ongoing both inside of and in close proximity to Atlanta City Hall.
The research also found attacks currently underway in Georgia’s State Capitol Building, which is just a few blocks away. In total, Coronet identified 678 active threats within a 5-mile radius of Atlanta’s City Hall.
The threats
Specifically, Coronet has validated that an undetermined number of attackers are currently deploying advanced phishing techniques [...]
The discovery
The threats were first discovered when an attacker attempted to phish several devices installed with Coronet’s SecureCloud platform. Researchers were able to identify the attack on those specific devices, and block any potential exposure to both the user and all of the cloud applications being used.

“While there is a lot we don’t know about the ongoing threats inside of Atlanta City Hall, we can say with complete confidence that the building – and all of the networks, devices and systems within – are at severe risk of another damaging cyberattack.

The Justice Department unsealed charges Wednesday against two Iranian criminal hackers who allegedly used ransomware to hit American hospitals, universities, government agencies and the city of Atlanta, causing tens of millions of dollars in damages.

In all more than 200 victims were affected, more than $6 million in ransom collected and damages exceeded $30 million, officials said..."
