I had some help a couple of weeks ago to get rid of an autodialler and quickpage. the browser hijack however has not gone.
cw shredder (latest update) continues to find cws search.x
updated spybot, sp1a download, spywareblaster and spywareguard aren't putting a stop to it (even tried using safe mode to clean up).

below is my hijack this log with spywareguard deleting the BHO - I could resend without deleting BHO if this would be helpful, but the BHO file .dll changes its prefix each time it is deleted and the machine rebooted.

    any help gratefully received.

    Thanks

    Hi MVB,

    Welcome to Wilder's!!!!!

    Try running Ad-Aware.

Download Ad-Aware and double-click to install.
    Then follow the following steps:

1.) Start Ad-Aware by double-clicking on its desktop icon.
2.) Update Ad-aware by using its Globe icon.
3.) After updating, close all IE windows, then close and restart Ad-aware.
4.) Be sure the following items are checked under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
    "Unload recognized processes during scanning".
5.) Be sure the following items are checked under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Cleaning Engine:
"Automatically mark all objects in result list".
"Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion".
"XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior deletion" <-- Check only if you have Windows XP or 2000.
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot".
    6.) Press "Scan Now".
7.) Check option "Use Custom scanning options".
8.) Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan".
9.) Press "Select drives\folders to scan".
10.) Select the active partition which is usually C:
11.) Press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
12.) If it finds "bad" files and registry keys, press "Next" again.
13.) All items should be checked. if not right-click in that pane and choose "select all".
    14.) Press "next".
15.) When it asks to remove all checked items, Press "OK".
16.) You may now exit out of Ad-Aware and reboot your system. Then go to the next section for CWShredder.

Please download the latest copy of CWShredder and run by double-clicking the icon of the file you just downloaded.
Click FIX and follow the instructions given.

Now reboot your system and post a new HJT log.

    Regards,
    Kent

    thanks for the info

    below is the hijack file

couldn't check all requested in ad-aware, but seems to have found quite a lot and got rid of it.

if there is more work to be done then help appreciated - if that has done the trick then a big thanks

    Hi MVB,

Just a little clean up left to do..

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups to the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {84D14965-2F86-400D-B01F-815E25B41D6C} - c:\documents and settings\steve\local settings\temp\temporary directory 14 for hijackthis1977.zip\backup-20040418-212705-106.dll (file missing)

    Reboot.

    Regards,
    Kent

    thanks Kent

but I have been away for the weekend and coming back switched on my computer for the first time after getting the all clear from you last week, and immediately spywareguard spotted a change in the browser page.
there must be something else in the computer that is triggering all this. deleting the system32 .dll file and all files produced by it doesn't seem to sort out the problem - I have done this many times.
cws.searchx was back in the system again tonight and was deleted by cwshredder
    Any more thoughts?
    Log below

    many thanks

    Hi MVB,

    Welcome to Wilders.

Before you start, please unzip or move HijackThis to a separate folder of its own. The program will make backups in the folder it's in. These easily get lost in a temporary folder or a folder with other programs.

Check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9B0F7DA9-15C0-4F3C-BEFF-FE3206B6A898} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll

Download CWShredder and run. Be sure ALL other windows are closed and use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

There also may be hidden files. See HERE for how to show hidden files.

Then reboot into safe mode and delete:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\kdfobaa.dll
sp.html <-- You amy have to do a search for this file.

Reboot and then post a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,
    Kent

    thanks Kent

i thought i had turned on hidden files - but hadn't (you must have lots of patience)

there is a hidden file called recycler on C:\ which had 2 files in which I deleted, though I am unable to delete the main file (called Recycler).

have done all else as requested, but also couldn't find sp.html even on a search.

    below is latest log

    many thanks

    MVB

yes unfortunately it has come back

    browser still being changed.

is the 'recycler' folder is important - access is denied, even as system administrator -it is being used by another program and therefore cannot be moved/deleted.

    any other ideas?

thanks for the link to the other page - looks as though there may not be a good answer as yet and will have to stick with it for a little while?

    thanks

    MVB

Not sure what has happened and don't want to tempt fate...
but had another go at removing the recycler folder (and 2 files within - one of which could be deleted, the other reappeared)
but no hijacking over the last 2 days.

so thanks for the help and hopefully won't come back

    MVB
