Based on trends in the first half of 2018, Webroot found that cybercriminals are shifting to increasingly sophisticated and targeted means of attack while also expanding their money making endeavors, as shown by the uptick in cryptojacking and cryptomining.

Malware in general, including ransomware and cryptomining, accounted for 52 percent of threats in the first half of 2018.

The number of cryptomining attacks increased by more than 83 percent in the past year, with more than 5 million people attacked with the malware in the first three quarters of 2018.

The firm’s research also found that cryptomining attacks increased steadily during the first half of the year, peaking in March, when around 1.2 million users faced an attack.
“The easier it is to distribute unlicensed software, the more incidents of malicious cryptominer activities were detected. [...] underpins what is arguably the biggest cyberthreat story of the year – malicious cryptomining.”

“And the reprofiling of existing server capacity completely hides its owner from the eyes of the law. Evidence suggests that the owners of many well-known botnets have switched their attack vector toward mining.”

Cryptocurrency mining malware is the number one malware menace - again

Cryptocurrency stealing software continues to be the most commonly distributed form of malware, according to a top ten list of the most prominent malware threats detected by security company Check Point.

Coinhive continues to be the most prominently distributed malware and it's followed by XMRig -- both of these cryptojackers secretly use the victim's computer to mine for Monero, with the profits directed into the crypocurrency wallet of the attacker.

The latest security report from Check Point shows that despite a fall in the value of all cryptocurrencies, 20 percent of companies continue to be hit by cryptomining attacks every week. At the same time ransomware attacks have fallen sharply, impacting just four percent of organizations globally.

Cryptominers have also evolved recently to exploit high profile vulnerabilities and to evade sandboxes and security products in order to expand their infection rates.

Cyber criminals are switching away from ransomware to stealthier attacks as the main sources of generating revenue, according to analysis by British artificial intelligence (AI)-based cyber security firm Darktrace.
The firm’s latest cyber threat landscape report is based on analysis of threats recorded from a customer base of more than 7,000 deployments.

The data reveals that the incidence of banking Trojans, which harvest the credentials of online banking customers from infected machines, increased by a staggering 239% in 2018 compared with 2017.
Darktrace also detected a 78% growth in the frequency of another under-the-radar threat, cryptojacking, within the same time period.

Given the decline in ransomware incidents in 2018, it seems that subtler attacks have become the weapons of choice for hackers,” he said.

Cryptominers Still Top Threat In March Despite Coinhive Demise

Although Coinhive shut down and its cryptominer dropped down on the sixth place in Check Point’s latest Global Threat Index, coinminers continue to lead the pack with Cryptoloot, XMRig, and Jsecoin taking the first, third, and fifth place.

"With cryptocurrencies’ values dropping overall since 2018, we will be seeing more cryptominers for browsers following Coinhive’s steps and ceasing operation," said Maya Horowitz, Threat Intelligence and Research Director at Check Point.
Cryptojacking moving to the cloud
Also, Horowitz stated that "cybercriminals will find ways to earn from more robust cryptomining activities, such as mining on Cloud environments, where the built-in auto-scaling feature allows the creation of a larger haul of cryptocurrency."

This is definitely a wake-up call given that Check Point's researchers already encountered companies that were asked to pay bills of hundreds of thousands of dollars after their cloud environments were breached and were used in cryptojacking campaigns.

Check Point: March 2019’s Most Wanted Malware: Cryptomining Still Dominates Despite Coinhive Closure

1 million crypto-jacking attempts blocked daily, despite Coinhive’s demise

According to new figures from Malwarebytes, the cybersecurity firm blocked over 200,000 requests to connect to the Coinhive network the day after it shut down on March 8. Domain requests have since tailed off to an average of 50,000 per day over the past week.

Try as they might, infected routers and websites can’t connect to Coinhive and so cannot go on to mine cryptocurrency.
That said, Malwarebytes has identified a new miner, WebMinePool, that’s targetting routers previously infected with the Coinhive script.
Coinhive is gone but crypto-jacking is still happening
Again, even though Coinhive is no longer operational, there are other scripts being used to illicitly mine cryptocurrency.
“We can certainly expect web miners to stick around, especially for sites that generate a lot of traffic.”
