An Estonian national pleaded guilty this week in an Alaska court on charges of building and operating a botnet comprised of internet routers that proxied malicious traffic for other cybercrime gangs.

According to court documents, Pavel Tsurkan, 33, of Estonia, created and operated a botnet named “Russian2015.”
The botnet, which Tsurkan controlled through the website russian2015.ru, allegedly infected more than 1,000 routers, the Department of Justice said on Thursday.

Dutch police have arrested two people for their alleged involvement in a phishing fraud-as-a-service scheme, one of them a 15-year-old suspect and the other a 24-year-old due to appear in court on Friday.

Authorities got an assist from security vendor Group-IB in the arrests for the “Dutch-speaking syndicate that develops, sells and rents sophisticated phishing frameworks,” according to the company. Group-IB had dubbed the syndicate and its “massive” operation “Fraud Family.”
The unnamed 24-year-old is accused of developing the phishing service kits, while the 15-year-old allegedly sold them. The younger suspect was released pending further investigation. Dutch police also said they searched a third 18-year-old suspect.

Group-IB said the Fraud Family operation, which has mainly hit victims in the Netherlands and Belgium since at least 2020 but perhaps as far back as 2018, is focused on stealing banking credentials.
Fraud Family gives the criminals access to a web panel that interacts with the phishing website, allowing them to ask for credentials including multi-factor authentication tokens.

A former Air Force intelligence officer was sentenced to 45 months in prison Tuesday for sharing top-secret information about the U.S.’s drone program to the press.

Daniel Hale was sentenced by Judge Liam O’Grady in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Va., for violating the Espionage Act.
Prosecutors had called for a harsher punishment, suggesting in a filing Monday that nine years would be appropriate for leaking to the media.

“For those like Hale, who unilaterally decide to disclose classified information, the existence of criminal penalties that are theoretically harsh but practically lenient is not sufficient,” prosecutors wrote. “A substantial sentence is needed also to account for Hale’s blatant disregard for the consequences of his conduct.”
Hale pleaded guilty to violating the Espionage Act in March, saying that he gave more than 150 pages of records classified at the top-secret or secret level to a journalist.

A Tallinn man was arrested a week ago in Estonia under suspicion that he has exploited a government photo transfer service vulnerability to download ID scans of 286,438 Estonians from the Identity Documents Database (KMAIS).

The attacker was apprehended on July 23, following a Cybercrime Bureau of the National Criminal Police and RIA joint investigation that started after RIA was alerted of a higher than the usual number of queries.

"During the searches, investigators found the downloaded photos from a database in the person's possession, along with the names and personal identification codes of the people," Oskar Gross, head of the police's cybercrime unit, said.
RIA added that the stolen information could not be used to perform notarial or financial transactions or gain access to state digital services by impersonating the impacted individuals.

RIA also said that the data was not transferred from the suspect's computer after it was stolen from KMAIS, and there is no reason to believe that it was misused in any way.
All Estonian citizens who had their ID scans and personal information stolen during the incident will be notified via email by the Estonian Police and Border Guard Board.

According to authorities, Abbas's money-laundering ring conspired to steal $100 million from an unnamed English Premier League soccer club. In addition, it was claimed that Abbas plotted to move £200m from a company in Edinburgh, Scotland.

“A significant term of imprisonment is necessary to send a strong message that the defendant’s conduct — which will forever haunt and embarrass his victims in countless ways, including their lives as professionals, daughters, friends, wives, and mothers — is illegal, cruel, and intolerable,” prosecutors said in court documents, arguing for a sentence of 42 to 48 months with one to three years of supervised release.

A 21-year-old Rockport man pleaded guilty Thursday to running a scheme to take over victims' social media accounts and steal hundreds of thousands of dollars in cryptocurrency.

Declan Harrington pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy, five counts of wire fraud, one count of computer fraud and abuse and one count of aggravated identity theft. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled by the court.
Harrington and co-conspirator Eric Meiggs, 21, of Brockton were charged in November 2019. Meiggs pleaded guilty on April 28, and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 24, 2022.
They used an illegal practice known as "SIM-swapping" and other techniques to access, take control of, and in some cases steal cryptocurrency from, the accounts.

A joint law enforcement operation between Europol, Italian, and Spanish police has resulted in the arrests of 106 members of the Italian mafia on crimes related to cybercrime and money laundering.
The suspects were arrested last week on the island of Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands, in a law enforcement operation named “Fontana Almabahia.”

The group executed SIM swapping attacks, phishing, and vishing in order to breach company networks and steal funds or trick employees into sending payments to the wrong accounts in a classic scheme called “CEO fraud” or “BEC scam.”
Using these tactics, the group stole and later laundered more than €10 million (~$11.7 million) in stolen funds, using a network of money mules and shell companies, Europol said today.

The hospitality company, which managed luxury hotels and resorts, was headquartered in Chicago and the servers for its website were located in northern Illinois.

At the beginning of the year on January 16, Adam Georgeson downloaded and deleted data from computers belonging to Welland Park Academy in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, and changed passwords of staff members.

On January 21, while employed at an IT company in Rutland, Georgeson was arrested for his actions on the school’s network.
However, his new employment did not last long because he was sacked in February and he once again trespassed the digital grounds of his former employer.

This activity included brute-forcing login credentials at web sites, performing spamming operations, and to penetration testing on remote devices to identify and exploit vulnerabilities.

A press release by the Ukrainian SSU states the hackers found his customers on private forums and Telegram channels, where he was paid through electronic platforms such as ‘Webmoney’ for his illicit activity. This payment platform is subject to sanctions in the Ukraine.

The actor registered an account on Webmoney with his real address, allowing the Ukrainian police to find where he lives.
