The company released its 2020 Environmental Progress Report today in which it shared its plan to reduce emissions by 75% by 2030 and the development of carbon removal solutions for the remaining 25% emissions. The company's aim is to ensure that every Apple product sold by 2030 will have zero impact on the environment.

Microsoft unveiled a new suite of sustainability initiatives Tuesday as part of its effort to zero-out the carbon debt the company has accrued over its lifespan.

The latest announcements include the largest single renewable energy investment Microsoft has ever made. The company is investing in 500 megawatts of renewable energy from Sol Systems, equivalent to the energy needed to power more than 70,000 homes in the U.S. per year.

Microsoft is also unveiling a new Sustainability Calculator of cloud customers to help them understand the carbon emissions generated by their cloud usage. The calculator uses AI and analytics to advise users on ways to reduce their carbon footprint and predict future emissions.

Google was at the leading edge of large technology companies seeking to go completely carbon neutral, having declared that status in 2007, and subsequently matching all of its global electricity consumption with renewable energy. Now the company says that it is breaking new ground by becoming the first major company to effectively eliminate its entire carbon footprint — going back to its founding — something it has achieved through purchase of “high-quality carbon offsets” as of today. Further, it’s also setting a goal of employing only carbon-free sources by 2030.

The first achievement — eliminating its overall carbon footprint — is relatively easily achieved simply by spending a lot of cash. Google didn’t share exactly how much it had purchased in carbon offsets, but the idea behind those is that you could buy support of projects including renewable energy or energy efficiency initiatives or projects to offset your own impact.

Facebook and Google are becoming carbon neutral businesses, joining competitors Apple and Microsoft in committing to put no excess carbon into the atmosphere, both companies have independently announced.
But the details of the two companies’ ambitions differs greatly.

Facebook has also announced a further goal for itself, committing to net-zero emissions for its entire “value chain” by 2030, including its suppliers and users.

“Over the next decade, Facebook will work to reduce carbon emissions from our operations and value chain,” the company said in a blogpost, “including by working with suppliers on their own goals, helping the development of new carbon removal technologies and making our facilities as efficient as possible.”

Even as Facebook, the world’s largest social media platform, admits that climate change “is real” and that “the science is unambiguous and the need to act grows more urgent by the day” the platform appears unwilling to take steps to really stand up to the climate change denialism that circulates on its platform.

Vodafone has announced that it will reduce its total global carbon emissions to net zero by 2040. By 2030, it says it aims to eliminate all carbon emissions from its own activities, and by 2040 it’ll eliminate emissions from Scope 3 sources such as joint ventures, supply chain purchases, the use of products it sells and business travel.

According to the firm, it had originally planned to meet the goal by 2050 but under current plans, this is brought forward a decade. This year, its Scope 1 & 2 emissions reached 1.84 million tCO2e, by 2030, this will be reduced by 100%. Its Scope 3 emission reached 11.9 million tCO2e this year and by 2030 will be reduced by 50% before being eliminated entirely in 2040.

The dirty secret of the computing and networking world is that most of its pollution comes not from the electricity used to run the devices, but from the energy and materials used to produce the chips that make it all possible.

In a typical laptop like a MacBook Air, manufacturing represents 74 percent of the device’s lifetime carbon emissions, including shipping, use, and disposal. Of that, about half is from integrated circuits, according to a recent study led by researchers at Harvard. Researchers have found similar trends throughout the industry.

“Chip manufacturing, as opposed to hardware use and energy consumption, accounts for most of the carbon output attributable to hardware systems,” the study’s authors said.

It said that it’s offsetting 125% of its upstream and downstream emissions using Gold Standard offsets and it’s giving the same dollar amount through the Stripe Climate Program which is helping to develop carbon removal technology.

Commenting on the initiative, the firm said:

Here’s the roadmap the company laid out. By 2030, Qualcomm says it will reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent from base 2020 levels. That same year, it plans to reduce its Scope 3 emissions by 25 percent from where they were in 2020.

According to an estimate from Imec, which recently announced a sustainable chip program involving Apple, approximately 75 percent of the greenhouse emissions tied to a mobile device are produced when it’s made, with almost half coming from the chip fabrication process.

Airbnb commits to operate as a Net Zero company by 2030

Airbnb has announced that it will be operating as a Net Zero company by 2030. The company will work towards this goal by mitigating carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions that are linked with its global corporate operations and putting money into nature-based solutions to neutralize residual emissions.
Airbnb Co-founder and CEO, Brian Chesky stated:

Addressing climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our generation. Committing to Net Zero is the latest action we’re taking to lower carbon emissions and we will continue to work with our community to promote sustainable travel.

In 2020, the home rental platform pledged to attain hundred-percent renewable electricity use for its corporate operations. Airbnb also became a founding participant in the Lowering Emissions by Accelerating Forest finance (LEAF) Coalition in 2021.

To help address the climate crisis, Airbnb is also working with its Host Advisory Board regarding sustainable practices in hosting, and working on determining the emissions from Experiences and stays to obtain data to manage the actions of Hosts and guests.

Amazon's emissions increased dramatically last year despite carbon neutrality goal

Despite the company's commitment to decrease its carbon footprint, Amazon's emissions grew by 18 percent last year, according to the annual sustainability report it released today.
For the entirety of 2021, the company’s activities emitted the equivalent of more than 71.54 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (for comparison, that's one and a half times the amount the U.S. government emitted in 2019.)

But this figure is undoubtedly a drastic undercount. While Amazon does include emissions from its warehouses and logistics network, as Reveal reported this year, the company employs a sort of loophole. While other retailers, like Walmart and Target, account for pollution related to any goods they sell, Amazon only counts carbon emissions for Amazon-branded products, which make up around one percent of total sales

Environmental experts have long voiced concerns over the immense climate toll of Amazon’s operations, especially its rush and two-day shipping options. Despite the lack of progress, Amazon’s goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 was noted in the report.

Apple calls on its global supply chain partners to decarbonize by 2030

Apple is calling on its global supply chain partners to decarbonize their operations by 2030 to help slow down global warming. The company said it will be evaluating the work of its partners in their efforts to decarbonize on an annual basis. Apple will require its partners to annually report on their progress, with an emphasis on Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy) emissions.

Apple itself has been carbon-neutral in its global corporate operations since 2020, but its supply chain partners play a huge part in creating products like iPhones and their operations aren’t carbon-neutral yet. The iPhone maker, with its announcement, is keen to change this situation within the next eight years.

Commenting on the plans, Apple CEO Tim Cook said:

“Fighting climate change remains one of Apple’s most urgent priorities, and moments like this put action to those words. We’re looking forward to continued partnership with our suppliers to make Apple’s supply chain carbon neutral by 2030. Climate action at Apple doesn’t stop at our doors, and in this work, we’re determined to be a ripple in the pond that creates a bigger change.”
