However, it now turns out that it is possible to run Windows software on the M1 Macs, following a demonstration of CrossOver 20 by the product's maker CodeWeavers, reported by 9to5Mac.

CrossOver is based on the open-source project WINE and emulates Intel Windows binaries via Rosetta 2 on the ARM Mac. A complete Windows installation is neither necessary nor possible with CrossOver.
The developers are satisfied with their first results, having managed to run programs on a throttled chip with a deactivated GPU core on the entry-level computer MacBook Air. CrossOver 20 requires the beta of macOS 11.1 Big Sur, as this comes with numerous bug fixes for Rosetta 2.

CodeWeavers: Okay, I'm on the bandwagon - Apple Silicon is officially cool

The new Apple Silicon-based Macs have dropped and the reviews are very positive. They've delivered faster machines that use less power, and they run CrossOver 20 brilliantly!
We have a range of the new systems on order. But we got impatient and discovered that our local Best Buy had the cheapest Macbook Air in stock, so we bought it and loaded CrossOver 20.0.2 onto it.

I can't tell you how cool that is; there is so much emulation going on under the covers. Imagine - a 32-bit Windows Intel binary, running in a 32-to-64 bridge in Wine / CrossOver on top of macOS, on an ARM CPU that is emulating x86 - and it works! This is just so cool.

The hallmark of the CrossOver 22 release is a complete redesign of the user interface (now with twice as many cupholders) for macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. Before this redesign, the last time we made significant UI changes was in CrossOver 15, and the last time we did a major overhaul of our UI on all platforms was CrossOver 9. Clearly, we were overdue for a CrossOver makeover.

We designed the new UI with two goals (twice as many as the leading competitor[1]): to make CrossOver more intuitive to use and offer a more modern look and feel.
