Cloudflare and Amazon AWS Outages Affecting Sites Everywhere

Cloudflare is currently suffering an outage this morning that is affecting web sites around the world. This outage is not affecting all regions and only certain domains, including BleepignComputer, so some of you will be able to see this article and others won't until the issue is resolved.

Cloudflare has opened an incident report for this outage title "Route Leak Impacting Cloudflare".
Cloudflare's CTO John Graham-Cumming has replied to a YCombinator Hacker News post with more detailed information. In his comment he stated that it looks like a route link with Level3 and that it is only affecting 3% of ther global traffic.

Ironically, it is hard to gauge the regions that are affected, as sites that we commonly turn to for outage maps are affected by the Cloudflare outage as well. For example, due to this Cloudflare outage, even downdetector.com is down.

Popular chat service Discord is experiencing issues today due to network problems at Cloudflare and a wider internet issue.

The app is currently inaccessible for its millions of users, and even Discord’s website and status pages are struggling. Discord’s problems can be traced to an outage at Cloudflare, a content delivery network. Cloudflare started experiencing issues at 7:43AM ET, and this has caused Discord, Feedly, Crunchyroll, and many other sites that rely on its services to have partial outages.

Future work that could have helped on Monday
The IETF is doing work in the area of BGP path protection within the Secure Inter-Domain Routing Operations Working Group (sidrops) area.
One new effort from this group should be called out to show how important the issue of route leaks like today’s event is.

However, as we said in Monday’s blog and something we should reiterate again and again: Cloudflare encourages all network operators to deploy RPKI now!
