Broadvoice, a well-known VoIP provider that serves small- and medium-sized businesses, has leaked more than 350 million customer records related to the company’s “b-hive” cloud-based communications suite.

The data includes hundreds of thousands of voicemail transcripts, many involving sensitive information such as details about medical prescriptions and financial loans.

Broadvoice provides one of the more popular business platforms for communications, which includes voice, contact-center technology, remote-workforce help, Salesforce.com integration, unified communications, SIP trunking and more.

Unfortunately, according to researchers at Comparitech, Broadvoice left an Elasticsearch database cluster containing such information open to the internet, accessible to anyone, with no authentication required. The cache of data included records with personal details of Broadvoice clients’ customers, they noted.
The largest collection (275 million records) included full caller name, caller ID, phone number, and city and state.

Of particular concern here are the details in some of the voicemail transcripts.

Perhaps more concerning, some details such as insurance policy numbers and enquiries about financial loans could be used in fraud attempts without any need for phishing. Customers should keep a close eye on financial statements and credit reports.

For the second time within a week, it's been revealed that sensitive voice messages containing patients' information have been exposed on the internet.

This time, security researchers say they discovered more than 200 unsecured voice transcripts of patient calls to drug giant Pfizer's automated customer support system exposed for at least two months on the internet due to a misconfigured Google Cloud Storage bucket.

The Pfizer news comes after the discovery of exposed customer voice transcripts belonging to Broadvoice, which offers voice over IP cloud-based telecommunications services to U.S. businesses (see: Sensitive Voicemail Transcripts Exposed). The Broadvoice database has since been secured. It included voicemail transcripts of patients leaving messages for clinics.
