they are totally overrated. and they are not independent. ublock (origin) is the superior solution which is free, independent and high customizable. and in special any extension from any antivirus vendor is very questionable because you feed them with a unique ID so they can track your behavior although it is (or should) anoymous. same for microsoft. my special dislike goes to malwarebytes because they bought http://www.hosts-file.net/ and made the lists non-readable and are no longer public.
