Even something like hiding a website’s full URL has gotten a bit negative feedback but Google assures that it’s doing it to protect unwitting users from harm.

It links to a study to study that showed how 60% of users were spoofed into thinking they were on the correct website when a misleading name of a popular brand appears in that URL. That’s not hard to imagine considering how history is full of websites with URLs designed specifically to fool people into entering their passwords in the wrong place.

Google’s extreme solution to hide the full URL, only showing the domain part of the address. By removing cruft, Google thinks users will be able to more easily tell a fake site from the real one.
That said, Google admits this isn’t set in stone yet and is only part of an experiment applied to a select random group of Chrome users. More importantly, there is also a way for users to turn the behavior on or off as they wish.

At this point, however, it could go either way but hopefully, Google will keep the option to turn URL hiding off if it does end up implementing it anyway.

Neowin: Chrome 86 experiment will obscure URL paths to stop phishing

To test the new feature, Google is randomly switching this feature on for random people. Those who get opted into the experiment will have two ways to view the full URL, either by hovering over the URL to expand it or by right-clicking on the URL and selecting ‘Always show full URLs” in the context menu.
If you want to test out the feature out of curiosity, download Chrome Canary or Chrome Dev, open chrome://flags and enable the following flags then restart Chrome: [...]

As alluded to previously, the move may be a sincere attempt to prevent phishing, however, it also makes the URL bar more irrelevant.

The goal is to make it harder for phishing attacks to succeed by hiding much of a site's URL. The change will roll out to some users in October in Chrome 86, but doesn't affect enterprise-enrolled devices.

Google states that they will be choosing participants randomly, but in order to obtain such info, I'm guessing the users must have to have either enhanced or standard protection enabled under Safe Browsing in the Security settings. These two settings authorize Chrome to send browsing data to Google. Selecting 'no protection', according to Google, means users are not protected against "dangerous websites, downloads, and extensions". I'll pass on the "protection" being offered (in exchange for browsing data) and let other security handle that.

The test will roll out in Chrome 86 – currently slated to ship Oct. 6 – with participants chosen randomly. Stark, Mill and Panditrao did not specify the number of Chrome users, or even a percentage of the browser's total, who will see the address bar pilot.

Google Chrome 85 fixes WebGL code execution vulnerability

Google addressed a use-after-free bug in the WebGL (Web Graphics Library) component of the Google Chrome web browser that could lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the browser's process following successful exploitation.

A fix for this code execution vulnerability is already included in Google Chrome's Beta release channel and it will also come to the Stable channel with the release of Google Chrome 85.0.4149.0 that will roll out tomorrow according to Chrome's release timeline.
High severity code execution vulnerability
The code execution security issue discovered by Cisco Talos' senior research engineer Marcin Towalski is tracked as CVE-2020-6492 and it received a high severity 8.3 CVSSv3 Score.

"This vulnerability is in ANGLE, a compatibility layer between OpenGL and Direct3D used on Windows by Chrome browser and other project," Cisco Talos' security advisory explains.
"With proper memory layout manipulation, an attacker can gain full control of this use-after-free vulnerability which could ultimately lead to arbitrary code execution in the context of the browser."
