Google Chrome engineers have announced today a new technical proposal that they hope will help restore the balance between user privacy and ad targeting on the internet.
Named the Privacy Sandbox, this is a new open web technology that Google would like to embed in Chrome, but would also like other browsers to adopt.

It consists of new APIs that will allow advertisers to show targeted ads, but without having direct access to users' personal details, as they do now. [...] technical specs.

ADS ARE KEEPING THE INTERNET ALIVE
Google said that while blocking cookies is understandable from a privacy standpoint, it also puts the web's future in jeopardy, as most sites depend on ads to fund themselves, and targeted ads have proven to yield the most financial revenue.

Hence, in its view, the new Privacy Sandbox proposal should be an acceptable middleground for both users seeking to keep their privacy and the advertising industry's ability to deliver targeted ads.

The proposed standards would make it harder for advertisers to follow your search history, and they would give you more discretion over what types of data are distributed to marketers and allow you multiple opportunities to essentially opt out. (Theoretically, you could see what data has been shared with a business that is, in turn, showing you an ad.)

But just as Facebook is struggling to convince its users that it cares about their privacy after a series of scandals and breaches of trust, Google will similarly have to overcome the wide consumer distrust of Big Tech platforms, even if these pivots are earnest.
What’s going to change?
Because the standards Google plans to implement remain fairly vague at this point, your average person probably won’t notice much of a change on Chrome anytime soon. Bennett Cyphers, of the privacy advocacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation, said not to expect much.

“They’re not trying to get rid of targeted ads. They’re not trying to change the ways that ads work on a fundamental level. They’re trying to tweak some knobs,” Cyphers told Recode.

I do think it's an interesting idea, because we need a solution for the ad-blocking problem. Still, ads are not supposed to track you and are not meant to be annoying. I don't know what's so hard for Google to understand about this. The "acceptable ads" thingy that they came up with is a joke. That's why I keep saying that Chrome can't be trusted.

Why some experts are skeptical of Google’s new Web privacy strategy

Google's Chrome team is feeling pressure from competitors over ad tracking. Apple has long offered industry-leading protection against tracking cookies, while Mozilla recently announced that Firefox will begin blocking tracking cookies by default. Microsoft has been experimenting with tracking protection features in Edge, too.

Last week, Google announced a plan to “build a more private web.” The announcement post was, frankly, a mess. The company that tracks user behavior on over ⅔ of the web said that “Privacy is paramount to us, in everything we do.”

Google not only doubled down on its commitment to targeted advertising, but also made the laughable claim that blocking third-party cookies -- by far the most common tracking technology on the Web, and Google’s tracking method of choice -- will hurt user privacy. By taking away the tools that make tracking easy, it contended, developers like Apple and Mozilla will force trackers to resort to “opaque techniques” like fingerprinting.
Furthermore, a key part of the Privacy Sandbox proposals is Chrome’s own (belated) plan to stop fingerprinting.

But hidden behind the false equivalencies and privacy gaslighting are a set of real technical proposals. Some are genuinely good ideas. Others could be unmitigated privacy disasters. Google’s push to phase out third party tracking cookies — aka its ‘Privacy Sandbox’ initiative — is facing a competition challenge in Europe. A coalition of digital marketing companies announced today that it’s filed a complaint with the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), calling for the regulator to block implementation of the Sandbox.

The coalition wants Google’s phasing out of third party tracking cookies to be put on ice to prevent the Sandbox launching in early 2021 to give regulators time to devise or propose what it dubs “long term competitive remedies to mitigate [Google’s dominance]”.

“[Our] letter is asking for the introduction of Privacy Sandbox to be delayed until such measures are put in place,” they write in a press release.

The group, which is badging itself as Marketers for an Open Web (MOW), says it’s comprised of “businesses in the online ecosystem who share a concern that Google is threatening the open web model that is vital to the functioning of a free and competitive media and online economy”.

The CMA confirmed to us that it’s received MOW’s complaint, adding that some of the coalition’s concerns reflect issues identified in a detailed review of the online ad market it published this summer.
However it has not yet taken a decision on whether or not to investigate.

“If the urgency of the concerns requires us to intervene swiftly, we will also assess whether to impose interim measures to order the suspension of any suspected anti-competitive conduct pending the outcome of a full investigation.”

Google announced the Privacy Sandbox initiative back in August 2019 to "fundamentally enhance privacy on the web" by developing a set of open standards. The initiative's goals are to "make the web more private and secure for users" and also to support publishers at the same time.

Google plans to remove third-party cookies as part of Privacy Sandbox, to address potential workarounds like fingerprinting, cache inspection, or network level tracking techniques, and to replace cross-site functionality hat publishers may use to continue earning revenue on the Internet.
In plain words: eliminate may tracking techniques on the Internet and replacing part of the technology used (not for tracking) so that publishers may still use it.

Google publishes detailed timeline for Privacy Sandbox rollout in Chrome

Last month, Google announced that it would delay Chrome’s plan to phase out support for third-party cookies. As part of that, the company provided more details about the Privacy Sandbox and has today released a rollout timeline.
As promised, the company now has a detailed schedule. Google was originally planning to phase out third-party cookies within two years of its 2020 announcement. That’s now set to take place over a three-month period, starting in mid-2023 and ending in late 2023.

Most are currently in the “Discussion” phase, save for combating spam/fraud. The next steps are “Testing” and “Ready for adoption,” with Google marking when Origin Trials (OT) for individual APIs have started in the browser.
Google wants to have APIs that fall under those four areas in place before the transition period and will not start the wide rollout until those technologies are “ready for scaled adoption.”

First off, who do they think they're trying to fool? Its the very fact of continuous ADS smack dab in your face via interruption of reading content that I for one WON'T PATRONIZE OR EVER BUY from those merchants. I say they need their own websites, not junkyarding the whole internet like a demolition derby.

On the other hand that does seem to maybe be an acceptable medium and the sooner the better.
