A bit clickbait title, but how much the current state is actually better than China would be already questionable. We tend to feel we're in better place, maybe that's true, but developed nations have long been conducted sophisticated mass ctrl even before the cold war where no internet. Bureaucrats know those who ctrl info wins and know how to achieve it w/out being noticed except for very few ppl. It's just a matter of sophistication and a difference in ideology which differentiates these 2 parties. Although the author suggests 2 possible future, the reality will go through btwn them - still we can do sth.

I'm sure that it's difficult for multinational corporations to choose when to observe a country's laws, when to ignore them, and when to actively work around them. But it is funny how Apple is playing so nice with China, while telling the FBI to basically pound sand. Maybe it has something to do with Chinese contractors making all their stuff ;) And maybe even some blowback over pressure to post more profit to the US.

You right mirimir. It's all because profit. Why else would they choose to manufacture their stuff in Asian factories (they even now looking for some other alternative Asian country than China because increased "high" production cost). And the margins are huuuge
The top model of iPhone cost what, $1000 ? Even after you take all the marketing, desing and manufacturing (which is the least of the pie) cost into account the profit is at the very least 60% and in some models maybe more like 70%

Yeah. But Apple does seem to respect user privacy more than Google, Facebook and Microsoft. For whatever that's worth.

    Just not in China :(

Google, nosy ******** that they are, aren't playing so nice with China. Although they have had second thoughts, it seems.

I'm afraid that most companies won't respect users privacy once western governments start to push laws that lowers privacy rights of their citizens. I wonder how those companies comply with anti-encryption law that was set by Australia.
