Have just spent the past three days dl"ing one of the linux os'es........an iso image......an then spent 12 hours trying to copy the iso to CD...........

For some unknown reason the Cd just wont write to..

this issue ONLY happens using the newer type CD's...the Slim Jewel Cases.......which should not be an issue.......have tryed both Compaq CD's and Memorex...........700 mb

oddly the cd burner does burn...to one of my older cd-rw 650 mb..........so the burner is working...just not on the 700 mb cd's. Have tryed writing at all the speeds.....ran tests......waited....waited...waited........NOTHING using the 700 mb cd.
TOTAL ignorant as to what may be wrong here and would appreciate any/all suggestions.........the burner is EasyCd Creator......
is there anything I need to change settings wise in order for the 700 mb to burn ? The burner does not seem to "see" the disc.

Hi Snowy. EZ CD Creator program should work for 700MB. What is your burner, itself, IE: Toshiba, Sony, ??
My first thought is if it is an older burner, it may not support 700MB.

sure nice to see you.....the burner is an ADPTEC.....under five years old......works really well....

the MB chart shows up to 700 mb......but the toolbar displays 650 mb......only once did it display 700......Root this would be the size of the disc.....

have burned iso before...........an now here I sit with a 700 mb useless iso.........aaaaaaaahhhhhhhh

Root.......I should mention that no type of file will burn to the 700 disc......no matter its size or script......nor can I copy cd to cd...............but can on the 650 disc...

    Snowy,
check to see if a "firmware" update is available for your burner. This will allow it to detect newer CDR's.

Also, you may want to update the driver for your chipset.

I've encountered these problems before and one of the above should help !!

    regards,
    bill ;)

yes..did specify iso...."create cd from image" and also tryed every other possible way.......the darn think just wont write to a 700 mb disc

    Eyespy

very much to my utter dislike I actually registered the program.....are should say that it registered itself even though I clicked to get off the website.........so when ahead and checked for updates.....none. for some reason I just don't believe that......LOL
I am not awear of how to up grade the chipset......or else don't recall having done so.........

    Root, Mickey...Eyespy

thank you very much for replieing to my call for help.....this has really been a disapointment not being able to make a cd...........I was dl'ing from 11 am friday until 4 pm sunday.........an was all ready to try linux......oh well.......I still think the burner can burn to a 700 mb disc if I can do whatever needs doing..........either that or find a freeware or trial version just to burn this one program........not something I would ususally consider......

What is the brand name of your Burner and how old is it ?

You shouldn't have to register for driver updates !

The chipset drivers would be the drivers for your motherboard.

Check out the fixes and the firmware update for my burner
    below !!

    regards,
    bill ;)

    Eyespy

I am not able to "see" the firmware thingy you so nicely provided.......its the way my "blocking" is setup.....an no quick way of removing. I did however try to upgrade every driver on the ye ole puter...motherboard etc.....everything shows as the most recent........
Kinda at wits end right now....sure don't want to purchase another burner just for this one program.......so guess I'll just be taking some lumps on this issue......an trashing the iso...............now thats going to really disappoint me.

you folks can just about guess what it was like trying to dl 700 mb on a dial-up connection...ouch!!
well...what can I say..except THANK YOU FOR TRYING TO HELP>>>>>APPRECIATED! this burning thing is not something I have much experience with......

    snowy,

This may be worth a shot. Look at this page for the CDR Identifier: http://www.lurkhere.com/~nicefiles/
NO big download and it may just help

    Hope that helps,

I didn't desert you Snowy, but unlike some people around here, I have to sleep occasionally.
You can go to Adaptec Support and check the faq and look for updated drivers. If you don't have the burner information, Fresh Diagnose could prolly get it for you.
There are also programs that can work around this problem I believe. I would have to dig into my CD backups and find the files I have. Let me know.
Mickey, do you know if it would be possible to use a couple of olders CDs and span two CDs when burning the ISO?
I'm guessing the ISO is over 650MB and that is why you have the problem.

    Snowy,
if it's any consolation, CD Burners are rather cheap these days !! :)

Just wondering if you used file compression like WinRar or WinACE, would you be able to fit that OS on a 650 mb CDR ?? Just so you would have the file until you figure out how to burn it in ISO !! ;)

    Good luck,
    bill :)

Seems I too needed some sleep[......an just waking up now.

Well the burner's limitation is 650 mb,,,,,,a search for firmware didn't turn up anything other than tired eyes LOL

the iso that needs burning is 700 mb......can it be compressed 50 mb shorter....hey I am game for trying.

yes burners are fairly inexpensive......its not so much the cost.......just that I rarely use cd burner an seems a waste to purchase another one.....the computer is getting old....its been out to the barn and around the block more times then I care to remember.......still working like a fine clock...by the grace of my higher power.
well after a few pots of coffee.....I'll did into this more..

    thank you everyone.....

    Snowman, something don't make sense.
I made that iso for knoppix using cd creator4 and a 700meg CD
Somehow you are overlooking a simple setting somewhere.
Heck when i bought my sys, 700 meg cd's didn't even exist, so it has to work... look again for the obvious overlooked thing...

if the burner isn't detecting the disks, maybe they not formated?
I Have used CD Creator and love that program.
I have trouble sometimes trying to burn onto cheap CD's at higer speeds than 12 though, using an expensive Yahama and also cheaper ones. Most CD-R's come preformated.
    You using CD-R or CD-WR?

I think you may well be absolutely right.....there is something I must be overlooking........an controler may have hit on it.....the cd may not be formatted.....

    Controler

ok, you can call me super dumb...BUT HOW DO YOU FORMAT A CDo_Oo_O never was faced with that before.

    Eyespy

found a firmware site and upgraded the software from v4 to v4.2.........

folks truely I am grateful for your help.....an want to give Koppix a real try...am just maybe get away from M$....again I thank each person you has replied......

    p.s.
    am trying out a new broswer..really its a bho...called tabsurf........looks like spyware.....

Found a site with instructions which I followed........supposedly there is a wizard to format the cd.......nope...no wizard........

at the moment the cd is stuck in f drive.....was doing a sys test of the drive with the cd in......an the cd would not even test.....its as if it just does not exist.........but using a 650 mb disc and all goes as it should...

Mickey....yes...according to what I just read easy cd creator WILL write a 700mb data cd...........so its not the burner.....it has to be something being overlooked.......

    Snowy,
you can only format or erase a Re-writable CD or CDR-W.
CDR's , once written to, cannot be erased or altered.
As for Burning software (NERO, CLONECD, Roxio EASY CD CREATER, etc) that should not have any bearing on your burner being able to DETECT or READ certain blank disks or various disk sizes, it's the CD Reader itself. Firmware updates usually provide a fix to this problem.
Updated MoBO drivers also help with this issue by updating IDE drives and Bus controllers !!

    regards,
    bill ;)

That is most kind and considerate of you to offer.....I may very well take you up on the offer....so please leave it "open"

Right now...call it being stubborn....I would like to give this one more try at burning.......going to take 96 hours to download......so will do the downloading while sleeping or not doing business..........all in all may take a week....ouch!!
Mickey I think it was ready to burn when I deleted it.....the files are hidden....so made a new folder...named newdirectory.....checked HIDDEN in koppix....and the dl from image appeared.......at that point I have no idea what I did to delete the program............Yes I would have purchased the CD if it could be found in the U.S or CA.......

so what do you think of Knoppix ?

Thank you Mickey for the good Looking Out for me on this one......

Knoppix is ideal to learn about LINUX.
By doing on the fly compression/decompression that CD is loaded with something like 2 gigs of programs.
As everything is run from the CD, there is no need to install on a dedicated partiion for Linux.
And the speed loss is somewaht negligeable.
All in all worthwile to have.
