Particularly relevant to me in this article:
"I won't lie to you: I have been using CCleaner for a decade until it was acquired by Avast in 2017. But that's on me, I use multiple browsers and I was lazy to open them and wipe the data on each browser, and CCleaner offered a fast way of doing that."

What I use Ccleaner for, no real need for speed with SSD's.

    - "Totally unrelated" ?? Far from.
    - And my doctor recently said that my eyesight was still good and I didn't need a (new) pair of glasses.

Deservedly so! A user commented on the article:

"One thing I agree on, Avast took an efficient nice freeware, ccleaner and turned it into a giant cesspool of bloatware, slow and full of predatory behavior. I use Windows every while from a VM to support family members and friends, and it is really sad to see how ccleaner was run into the ground by Avast."

Seems it may have been a bit of a hoax

    https://www.htnovo.net/2019/09/riguardo-ccleaner-nei-forum-microsoft.html

    Using Google translate..
CCleaner is not in any Microsoft Blacklist and there are no Blacklists regarding other domains in the official Microsoft forums.
Publication errors have led to the dissemination of misinterpreted announcements that do not correspond to the reality of the facts.

In retrospect it did seem fishy.

We all know MS would never do something like that :D.

More obfuscation and over-simplification made for bloat-lovers of the world! And that user interface is uglifying itself right up there with metro.

    Avast dumbing it down.

As long as the custom clean remains ... though I am increasingly inclined to use Wise Disk Cleaner.
