I was wondering if Webroot's Android security detects this app and if so, is it somehow white listed? It's been claimed to have rootkit type behavior. http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way...ret-software-on-phones-logs-nearly-everything
I'm not sure on how we handle it. The mobile forums would likely be a better place as I'm not involved with the mobile side of the company. Let me know your results!
Sounds about right. The thing comes factory-installed, so it's going to be part of the system image. Can't uninstall that from the phone without root. I guess it really becomes a question of whether the app detecting it would really benefit anybody, especially since there are other apps out there for free that can detect it and also some instances of it that cannot be detected by other apps without root permissions.
Based on the pervasiveness of it, I'd think it could also cause some FUD as it's likely going to be detected by millions of users at once if we were to roll out a signature for it. I think the hardware/OS manufacturers are going to have to take care of this one to prevent mass panic/confusion/problems/incompatibilities.
In the big picture of things, this is one app on a number of phones. For the phones this app is not installed on there may be a different app, just as dubious.
Yeah, there already were a lot off companies announcing that C IQ rootkit is not on their phones, but that doesn't mean there aren't alternatives, and C IQ seems mostly put on US phones, so there's probably a EU company that makes similar software.
