Two units of cruise operator Carnival Corp disclosed on Monday that they were the targets of a cyber attack, which they identified in May last year.

The units, Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, said their investigation revealed unauthorized third-party had access to personal information, including mail accounts, names, Social Security numbers, and credit card information of some guests and employees.
The units said they acted quickly to shut down the attack and prevent further unauthorized access.

identified suspicious activity in their network. The incident involved unauthorised access to multiple employee email accounts in the period of 11 April – 23 July 2019. Some of the emails contained personal information of guests, crew, and employees.
Furthermore, they are reviewing their security policies and implementing changes to enhance their security program. The security incident also impacted employees working for Holland America Lina, another travel company owned by Carnival Corporation.

Jonathan Knudsen, senior security strategist at Synopsys, told TEISS that news of the data breach at Princess Cruises makes one thing perfectly clear: all businesses are software businesses. Regardless of specifics, software is part of the underlying critical infrastructure that supports every business.

"Businesses of all types are realising that software is critical infrastructure. When software fails, the consequences can be severe, ranging from inconvenience and expense all the way up to reputation damage and loss of business continuity.

What Happened?
In late May 2019, we identified suspicious activity on our network. Upon identifying this potential security issue, we engaged cybersecurity forensic experts and initiated an investigation to determine what happened, what data was affected, and who was impacted. It now appears that between April 11 and July 23, 2019, an unsanctioned third party gained unauthorized access to some employee email accounts that contained personal information regarding our employees, crew, and guests.
