    hi guys
there's this empty folder with several subfolders in it.i tried every possible way to delete it to no avail.i even used a live linux distro to try to delete it but it says "write-protected system file".i tried taking ownership both under windows and linux but it didn't work.then i used kill disk bootable cd and there were one file and one folder in it which aren't shown under windows and linux.file is a "desktop.ini" file and the folder is portable defraggler folder.
what can i do to delete this folder?

btw, this folder is not on the same disk with windows.it's on a separate disk with various data files on it.

Unlocker is good software. It will delete locked files that can't be removed through the usual means.

Run as admin a cmd prompt, then:
    Code:
    chkdsk X: /f
change X with your drive letter.

USA still the best. But barely.
    Safe mode works sometimes.

PCHunter will scrape the whole plate (folder w/files) clean in a single click.

Try Safe Mode first like zapjb suggests and if that fails Unlocker like Minimalist suggests would be my next step.
    Good Luck.

Colour me surprised if Unlocker works, but deleting from Linux doesn't...

I had the same issue a few times back on Xp where somehow they were "locked on disk" for whatever reason. Those unlocker apps often times just don't have enough of the releasing of handles etc. or whatever makes it stick like glue that way.

Once upon a time I used a Linux Mint pen disk to parallel to Windows and reach in to draw it out. Finicky behaviors sometimes these machines.

Free tools like one I mentioned will pull it out and if it was connected to explorer some weird way which happens, a simple explorer restart and it's gone anyway.

    Good Luck :)

I've used Linux successfully in the past when Unlocker failed. You can try to save the other files, and then format the whole disk.

I'm surprised that A Linux live cd didn't delete your folder: in the pats,I had twice the same problem and Linux worked fine.

thank you all for your help.i'd already tried all the methods recommended here except for @Mister X 's before i created this thread, and none of them had worked.neither safe mode, linux live cd or unlocker, etc.
i thought "chkdsk x: /f" wouldn't solve the issue because even safe mode and linux live cd had failed to do so.but then i thought why not give it a go and it worked.it was a corrupted folder indeed.
    thank you guys.

never had that - user made trouble for sure - wrong copy&paste, wrong symlinks, folder stacking whatever.
chkdsk helped out? -> hdd going to fail 4ever.

and next time please answer questions, any other is not polite and wont animate people to help again if they suppose not to get answers.

We learn something new all the time and usually not by choice but glad anyway that it worked out for you with ChkDsk.

    Cheers.

Yes, something new for me too. But it makes sense. Glad to see that the problem is solved.

If a process Killer like such mentioned utilities not work, then I think a process hasn't locked that file/folder. Also it's confirmed by restarting in safe mode and booting a live dvd and still doesn't work.

My next bet is filesystem corruption. If not (or also) then a damaged hdd surface, damaged sector.

Note: I suggest OP to run diagnostic routine to check HDD in case it is a HDD.

As a technician I have faced many times these issues.

If a Linux boot disk did not work I was not surprised that chkdsk did. Sounded like a corrupt MFT to me.
