Just a few months after it launched, Canon's image.canon cloud platform has had to temporarily shut down after an issue caused the loss of some users' photo and video files.

The service went down on 30 July and now Canon has provided an explanation, saying "we identified an issue within the 10GB long term storage on image.canon" and that "some of the original photo and video data files have been lost". It's not yet clear how widespread the issue is, so we've asked Canon UK for clarification.

According to Canon's statement on image.canon, it's this 10GB storage that's been affected by the issue. As a result, Canon says "we have temporarily suspended both the mobile app and web browser service of image.canon".
Canon added that "there has been no leak of image data" and that "we have confirmed that the still image thumbnails of the affected files have not been affected", although that's unlikely to be much consolation to the affected users.

Updated 4/8/20: We've updated this story with a new statement from Canon now that the image.canon service is back online.
It "temporarily suspended" the service over the weekend, but "after having resolved the issue that resulted in the loss of the photo and video image files, we resumed the image.canon service as of August 4, 2020".

Canon has confirmed that some users’ media has been permanently lost following a coding error that arose from a botched attempt to switch its image.canon service to new software.

The company attempted to switch its cloud-based media hosting service to a new version of the software that controls these services on 30 July, but soon identified an issue involving the 10GB long-term storage option.
In order to further investigate the problem, Canon temporarily took down both the mobile and web-based applications, leading to an outage that coincided with a suspected ransomware attack, although the two incidents are entirely unrelated.

An update issued by the firm revealed the code to control the short-term storage operated on both the short-term storage and long-term storage functions, which directly caused the loss of some images stored for more than 30 days.

“There is no technical measure to restore lost video images,” the company said on the image.canon website. “Still images can be restored, but not with original resolutions. We offer our deepest apologies to affected users.”

Canon publicly confirms August ransomware attack, data theft

Canon has finally confirmed publicly that the cyberattack suffered in early August was caused by ransomware and that the hackers stole data from company servers.

BleepingComputer was the first to report the attack after tracking a suspicious outage on the cloud photo and video storage service (image.canon) that caused users to lose files.
Employee data stolen
On August 5, Canon USA sent out a company-wide notification informing employees of extensive system issues that made multiple applications - Teams and email among them, unavailable.

A partial screenshot of the ransom note obtained by BleepingComputer showed that the outage had been caused by Maze ransomware, a group that typically steals data from compromised networks to pressure victims into paying up.

In a public announcement on Wednesday evening, Canon says that the data accessed by the attacker included employees' names, Social Security number, date of birth, the number for the driver's license number or government-issued ID, the bank account number for direct deposits from Canon, and their electronic signature.

Camera and lens manufacturer Canon U.S.A. Inc. was hit with a proposed class action after a ransomware attack exposed current and former employees’ personal information.

The plaintiffs—residents of Ohio, New York, Florida, and Illinois—allege that the company acted negligently and violated several state trade practices laws by failing to guard against the threat, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
