I no longer can connect to the internet with Mozilla Firefox, Chrome or Internet Explorer with my desktop computer, Windows XP Professional operating system. Not as easy as it used to be to pick it up and take it to the repair shop. Any ideas what I could do to trouble shoot for the problem myself? I know just enough to get myself into trouble. I will appreciate all comments and would thank you in advance.

Thanks for replying zapjb. I am going to try to connect to the internet a little later tonight. I can still receive my email so at least that is still working. I don't remember updating any programs recently. When this first occurred I received a notice from Firefox saying it had crashed and to send a report to Firefox or to quit the program. When I tried to submit the report it wouldn't submit leaving the only option to quit the program. I uninstalled the Firefox version I had and reinstalled Firefox version 49, an older version than I removed. It too failed to work giving me the same notice. I had hoped there would be a simple software I could run to pinpoint the problem. Anyway, I did download WinSock XP Fix 1.2 to try later if I can't fix it before. Regardless I will let you know what happens later. Thanks again for replying.

YW. Since you connect to email you don't have a internet problem. I believe you have malware & or borked files/permissions. I'm going state some suggestions but I am not responsible if you screw up your pc. Going to link to a guide & a program. IF your going to do this read the guides AT LEAST 3 times before attempting.

Do a system restore from a restore point created prior to when Firefox crashed.

For starters I wouldn't be going online with IE 8. Way to vulnerable.

If your using a personal firewall you may have inadvertently prevented your browser from
connecting to the Internet. Check your settings including any anti-virus and anti-spyware
    software you have installed.

Check plugins and extensions. They can become corrupted and cause problems.
Restart your browser in Safe Mode or its equivalent to temporarily disable add-ons.

Try resetting your browser or deleting all cookies, browsing and tracking data and
    restarting your browser.
If your browser still cannot get online, you may need to disable DNS prefetching.

It is also possible a corrupt browser profile is causing your browser to malfunction.
Try deleting your old profile and creating a new profile.

If all else fails then do a image restore from earlier backup when everything was working.

Last night I tried accessing the internet with Chrome, it failed to load completely; I then tried Internet Explorer, it worked as it should; I then tried Firefox, which failed to load. I clicked on all of my icon program links and they worked fine the first time but a few failed to work when I tried again later. Also when I tried later with Internet Explorer it failed to load. This makes me believe I have something other than connection problems; I believe I may be getting in a little over my head. As stated earlier I know just enough to get myself into trouble. I did run a complete scan with Malwarebytes, which I have had installed forever and always keep upgraded and updated, and it quarantined an Adware file. I deleted the quarantined file before thinking. I believe the name included something about "Core" but can't be sure. Regardless, I will try again tonight and if I am still having problems I may try running Windows Repair 4.0.7. Odds are I will be taking the old XP computer to a repair shop. I appreciate all of the replies and information. Thanks to everyone.

Brian, sometime back I had problems when using System Restore so I turned it off. I will check to see if I turned it back on but I doubt it. Thanks!

Brian, I do have but it isn't recent. It is an old computer that I don't have anything important on but it was working fine until now. Last night the CD player went out so in the next few days I will take it to a repair shop and have it looked at and the CD player replaced. It is just to old to do much to but it sure is a lot easier to type on than the new laptop I have. Again thanks very much for your help.

Could be DNS problem. If your email is you ISP email it doesn't require DNS lookups.
    Try this in your browser.
    https://45.33.17.126/
That should open this forum without requiring a DNS lookup so if it works, DNS is your problem.
If not, it's something else. Like a misconfigured host file perhaps.
