Fairphone, the Dutch social enterprise that’s on a mission to rethink the waste and exploitation that underpins the business of consumer electronics, has unboxed its third smartphone.

The handset, which is sold with the promise of longevity rather than cutting edge obsolescence, goes on pre-sale from today in Europe via Fairphone’s website with a suggested retail price of €450 (depending on local taxes and levies). It will ship to buyers on September 3.

Commenting in a statement, CEO Eva Gouwens said: “We developed the Fairphone 3 to be a real sustainable alternative on the market, which is a big step towards lasting change. By establishing a market for ethical products, we want to motivate the entire industry to act more responsibly since we cannot achieve this change alone.”
More than 80% of the volume of the Fairphone 3 is recycled, according to founder (and former CEO) Bas van Abel. He also touts its own research that suggests a Fairphone 3 owner who’s able to keep and maintain the device can save 30% of CO2 emissions or more over the product’s lifetime.

Its latest smartphone, the Fairphone 3 — just released this week in Europe — represents the startup’s best chance yet of shrinking the convenience gap between the next hotly anticipated touchscreen gizmo and a fairer proposition that requires an altogether cooler head to appreciate.
On the surface Fairphone 3 looks like a fairly standard, if slightly thick (1cm), Android smartphone. But that’s essentially the point. This 4G phone could be your smartphone, is the intended message.

The only visual evidence is repairability. Flip the phone over and a semi-opaque plastic backing gives a glimpse of modular guts. A tiny screwdriver included in the box allows you take the phone to pieces so you can swap out individual modules (such as the display) in case they break or fail. Fairphone sells replacements via a spare parts section of its website.

Zooming out for a second, the Fairphone certainly makes an interesting contrast with some of the expensive chimeras struggling to be unfolded at the top end of the smartphone market right now.

The Fairphone 3 is that rare gadget that’s designed to last, not to be quickly replaced through a relentless cycle of planned obsolescence. What the €450 phone lacks in specs is made up for in value with a modular design that’s meant to be repairable, according to the company. It’s a claim that was put to the test with an iFixit teardown.

Unsurprisingly, the latest Fairphone scored a perfect 10 out of 10 for repairability, just as it did with the Fairphone 2 in 2016. Notably, the iFixit teardown doesn’t once mention the word “adhesive.”

IFixit says the new enclosure is easy to open with repairability assisted by an even more modular design than previous Fairphones. “Reassembling this phone won’t be much of an issue, and we’re very confident it’ll still work,” says iFixit in the teardown, which is perhaps the highest praise possible from the right-to-repair movement.

Though perhaps not as well known in North America as in Europe, one company that has really taken to heart the idea of tackling sustainability from multiple fronts, including material sourcing, manufacturing, distribution, customer experience, and recycling (e.g., the circular economy) is Fairphone.

The Fairphone 3+ smartphone has just been announced. The name of this smartphone may sound familiar to you, as its predecessor is called the Fairphone 3. These two devices are actually quite similar, with several differences.

This smartphone comes with upgraded camera modules. The company behind this phone is called Fairphone, and it does things differently. Not only are their smartphone made from recycled materials, but the company also allows you to upgrade them.
These new camera modules can actually be installed on the regular Fairphone 3. All you need is a screwdriver, as the Fairphone 3 is well-known for being one of the most repairable smartphones around.

The Fairphone 3+ comes with a 48-megapixel rear camera, compared to a 12-megapixel unit on the Fairphone 3. Its front-facing camera has also been upgraded from 8 to 16 megapixels.
The device contains 40-percent of recycled plastic
The Fairphone 3+ is made out of plastic.

In any case, if you use a Fairphone 3, you can get these new camera modules for €70 until the end of September. Starting from October, they will be priced at €94.90.
The rest of these phone’s specs are basically identical to the Fairphone 3. The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 632 SoC, while it includes 64GB of expandable internal storage.

A 3,040mAh battery is also included, along with the Gorilla Glass 5 protection for its display. Android 10 comes pre-installed on the device, by the way. The phone features a 5.7-inch fullHD display, in case you were wondering.
The Fairphone 3+ is now available to pre-order for €469 from the company’s website and from selected partners, such as box.co.uk. The product will go on sale on September 14, and be available across Europe.

Today marks a giant leap forward, but it’s a journey that’s not going to be quick. Seven years after the launch of our first phone, many of the issues in our industry are the same – or even more urgent – than when we first started.

The industry has created a habit of hunger for the latest improvements, and consumers have embraced the fashionability of owning the latest model, even if their old phones are still working.

Fairphone isn't one of the most well-known smartphone manufacturers out there, but it isn't really trying to compete with the top players in the game. The Dutch company has been making phones for a few years, and it places a huge focus on sustainability, both in terms of protecting the environment and the people that work on its phones.

Recently, the company introduced the Fairphone 3+, an upgraded version of the Fairphone 3 that now comes with a 48MP rear camera, a 12MP selfie camera, and a new plastic back that uses 40% recycled plastics, a major increase from the 9% recycled plastic used in the Fairphone 3.
The company also pays a living wage bonus to the factory workers that build its phones, which helps justify the €469 price tag that's higher than you'd expect to pay for these specs.

Today Fairphone announced an extension of its partnership with /e/OS to bring the privacy by design operating system into the hands of Fairphone 3 and 3+ users. While it was possible to install /e/OS on older phones like the Fairphone 3, the process could be a bit complicated for those not technically inclined. Now with this update, users can take advantage of an Easy Installer that was developed in conjunction with the /e/OS community.

/e/OS was chosen by the Fairphone community as their preferred alternative operating system to Android, and users can select which OS that they want to run on their devices.

he team at Fairphone has announced that the Fairphone 3, which was launched in 2019, will no longer be on sale. Customers who have already purchased this phone need not worry, however, because updates will continue to be delivered until 2024, the camera upgrade will remain available, and spare parts will still be available for purchase if any of your phone’s components fail.

With the sales of the Fairphone 3 ending, anyone looking to get into the Fairphone ecosystem will have to purchase the Fairphone 3+ which was launched last August.
