I was sucessful creating a bootable usb thumb drive for backup,as well as a bootable DVD rom, but I am unable to choose an external usb hard drive for a recovery enviorment, can it be done?, or am I missing something? I know there are tools to create a bootable usb device from an ISO, but I have not tried them yet.
    Thanks,
    Scott

You could try to create an image of the boot USB key that you built, and restore it to the external USB disk. I´m not sure if this works, I haven´t done it, I prefer to boot from UFDs.

Or, post your question in the "Backup, imaging and disk mgmt" forum, for more exposure.

I just figured it out, I copied the burned DVD to the empty hard drive, and set the volume to active, and it boots from it.
    Thanks!

I eventually installed Linux to the hard drive, with a seperate bootable partitions for the 64 and 32 bit versions, so I can use Linux for file manipulation, grub boot loader, and internet connectivity, and the proper 32 and 64 bit versions for the backup and restore opperations
