    Hi,
Can anyone enlighten me on CA ETrust Version 7 Promo which is available for free? Please let me know of its features and if possible send me a download link.
Are the virus definitions and program updates free for life?

How is the product as compared to---
    Avast Proessional
    Bitdefender Standard 8

    Thanks
    Abhishek

  2. Its a great proggy for average users who like a minimalist interface and dont want or need extra choices about configuration. Its fast, light on resources and has a consistent record of ITW detection.

I happen to be an avid net user and download loads of stuff. How is it in terms of following:

    Virus Detection & Cleaning
    Trojan Detection
    P2P Protection
    IM Protection
    Outbound/Inbound Mail Protection
    Firewall
Web Shield Protection (does it detect viruses while surfing the internet?)

If possible send me a [GLOW=""]download link[/GLOW] as well.

    Regards,
    Abhishek

I THINK THAT THE TRIAL IS OVER:

Exclusive offer for Microsoft customers. Free 12-month software subscription to CA's eTrust EZ Antivirus . Valid for new users only. Limit 1 per household. Not to be combined with any other offer. Annual subscriptions can be renewed after first year at current renewal rate. Free software offer expires 8/1/05.
**ICSA Certification means the software must detect 100% of "in-the-wild" viruses. See www.icsa.net. **IDC 2003

    --------------------------------------------------------------

There is another offer still on that page, 2 years for 19.95USD.

I am not talking about the 1 year Free offer for Microsoft customers.
I have heard of a TOTALLY FREE PROMO version of CA's etrust antivirus. I heard that its free for life.
CA has stopped distribution of this product. But certain websites have the download.
So I just want that link and information about the features & functionality of the product.

    Thanks
    Abhishek

It's not too hot on trojan detection which I think you will need judging by your surfing habits above.

May I suggest that based upon your net usage, there are better AV's, IMHO, than Etrust to consider. For example, Avast Home Edition.

Overall, from your above post, for the protection you want, you may be better looking at an overall security suite or at least a good AT to back up your AV.

Otherwise the 16MB download is still available here; https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=38651&highlight=Promo

I wouln't touch it with a pole......have tried different versions, but found it very poor. For example: archive scanning=bad. E-mail Eicar detection=very bad.
Run the Eicar mailtest en see for yourself.......bad, bad & bad.

In my opinion a poor program and like they said here: you are better of with Avast.
But, if you don't mind paying a few bucks: Dr. Web. Great scanner!!

    Good luck. ;) Putin

    agreed with mr putin.

I thought with CA behind it, it was a good AV. Not.

    used ver6.
    - couldn't automatically update signatures for some time (in Dec 2004)
    - wasn't able to catch an email virus (can't remember the name) on my in-laws machine

the only good thing was that it used minimal system resource.

Though it was free for a year, it put me off etrust for good.

the promo that Abhishek is enquiring about is diffirent to the single etrust av that has a year free licence. The promo is actually very nice and for most tidy surfers is all they will need. However for Abhisheks surfing he definitely sounds like there is a need for a lot more security with his surfing. The Avast as recommended by blackcat is proberbly his better free option. However if I were in his sandles I would save up my rupes and buy something like Kav .
