Marriott International will be trialing the biometric feature at two Chinese hotels, possible expanding it globally.

Business travelers staying at select Marriott hotels in China may soon be able to check into their room with a quick scan of their face, according to a Wednesday Reuters report.

As noted in the report, the international hotel chain is testing facial recognition technology in its check-in process at two separate hotels in Hangzhou and Sanya. The technology will be tested for a potentially wider rollout in the future, the report said.

[...] However, facial recognition is one of the most controversial technologies in use today, and could scare off potential guests for its perceived invasion of privacy.

To use the new feature, hotel guests must first scan their IDs, let the system take a photo of their face, and then add their contact details, the report noted. Once the guest's booking information and identity have been confirmed, a room key will be presented.

China’s biggest app, WeChat, partnered with InterContinental to open a smart hotel in Shanghai that lets users book rooms, remotely check in, and use their phones as key cards — all without requiring human assistance.

Once they’ve completed their reservation, travelers verify their identity at the hotel through facial recognition and collect their digital key card

Breakfast vouchers are included in the customer data within the app, so you can just scan your face at the dining area to grab a meal.
WeChat and its parent company Tencent have been working on developing smart hotel experiences since 2014, but now it’s added facial recognition into the mix for faster identity checks.

It is also an experiment that tests consumer comfort levels with unmanned commerce in China - a country where intrusive data-sharing technology is readily tolerated and often met with enthusiasm.

Guests check in at podiums that scan their faces, as well as passports or other ID. Visitors with a Chinese national ID can scan their faces using their smartphones to check in ahead of time.
Elevators scan guests' faces again to verify which floor they can access and hotel room doors are opened with another face scan.

As Skift reports, it all starts with booking through an app, where guests can pick a floor and a view, exploring the minimalist room.
No need to pick up a key from the lobby, because the elevator will scan your face and take you to the correct floor, and your face will open the room door.

Ask Genie, Alibaba’s Alexa-like assistant, and a three-foot tall robot will deliver the goods. Too hot? Too cold? Too many lights? Ask Genie to shut the curtains or crank up the heat.
Forget your wallet? No problem: Face-scanning technology will send the charges straight to your room bill.

As the use of technology at airports has shown, though, it’s pretty clear people are willing to give up a little privacy for more convenience and speed.

I recently stayed at Alibaba’s futuristic FlyZoo hotel, which is adjacent to its headquarters in Hangzhou, China.

Here, there are no keycards and everything is cashless. It features facial recognition doors, robotic arms at the bar and even robots that deliver items to guest rooms.
Alibaba hopes the property will be a model for what a hotel of the future may look like.
Andy Wang, CEO of Alibaba Future Hotel, claims the data recognition information is only kept during the duration of the guests’ stay and is not kept on record.

“Everybody loves the ease of getting into the hotel faster. No one would say ‘I want to go to the front desk and do more,’” Peggy Fang Roe, Marriott International’s chief sales and marketing officer for Asia-Pacific told CNBC.
She said certain Marriott properties in China could soon be reducing the traditional front desk check-in process pending local government approval.
