And if you don't want to install it, use the portable version.

Correct me if I am wrong, but did I not do the equivalent of the GWX control panel by doing the REG option of http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...10-update-enable-disable-windows-7-8-1-a.html and by uninstalling KB3035583? At least, the visible effect is that the Windows Update control panel no longer displays the single-option 'Upgrade to W10 now', and the GWX icon disappeared from the taskbar.

Shall I still do the GWX control panel? I am a bit worried that 'doubling-up' could get me into trouble.

Yes, the REG option should do the trick.
GWX Control Panel has that and and some other options, including a Monitor Mode, so you keep an eye on any unsuspected changes.
If you haven't done so already, best to change WU settings to 'notify but do not download' and also ensure 'Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates' is unticked.
It will not do anything you don't tell it to, and it will just show / confirm what you have already done. All options (except Clearing WU Cache), are reversible also.
KB3035583 may come back. It has been re-released 11 times if I'm not mistaken.
There is a portable ('standalone') version of GWX Control Panel. You can always give it a whirl, and delete if you don't like it.

Even though I changed the setting in Group policy editor not to update my OS, I occasionally still double check with the portable version of GWX Control Panel that nothing is going on in the background.
You never know with M$ these days if they would change the registry setting back to allow Win 10.

I changed that setting but still get GWX offered as Optional update. I had to hide it three or four time already. That's why I don't trust Windows update any more and check each offered update before installing them.

    Re: Patch KB 3035583 ...

"Set an AllowOSUpgrade registry key to 0 -- either manually or via the Local Group Policy Editor control panel (gpedit.msc) -- and, in theory, this will prevent the upgrade from occurring, but on many PCs a running scheduled task (refreshgwxconfig-B) which is installed as part of the patch, resets the AllowOSUpgrade setting to 1 every time it runs. Change it back to 0, and it will be reset to 1 later that day.

Simply uninstalling the KB 3035583 patch likely won’t work because Microsoft has rolled out numerous versions of the patch, all with the same name. So if you remove one version, all that happens is you get rolled back to a previous one." - Source: Martin Brinkmann at Ghacks

It must be hidden every time it is presented in windows update. (right click the update and select hide).

Yes, REG option (for Home users), or Group Policy setting, available on Pro, won't disable new KB3035583's (GWX) being offered.
These must be ignored and optionally hidden.
GWX Control Panel can get rid of it if it is already installed, and re-enable if / when you want it.

Wow, the GWX Control Panel got several votes of confidence in the last few posts, so I downloaded the portable version on my computers. It is indeed nice to have all relevant info in a single window, although I did not need to change anything.

I am still not sure if the tens of GBs of unexpected Internet usage that I incurred is W10-related or not :(

Edit: Panda bears are often artificially inseminated because it is so difficult to breed them naturally :)

hiten, not finding any negative writings about these 4 updates, I went ahead and installed them yesterday in 2 computers.

Checked with GWX Control afterwards, so far, so good. Just FYI.

PS. Decided to hide KB3139929 for the time being because I don't use IE as my day-to-day browser.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I originally installed that update on 3/8 when it came out. Then made an image of Win 7, and hadn't used it since. Yesterday I loaded the image and made a few changes, including a few reboots, and after that, Chrome loaded with some "go.microsoft.blahblah" url in it, and it was a blank screen, which I assumed was an MS ad for 10 that adblock plus blocked in Chrome. So yes, it seems that it used the default browser, which in my case wasn't IE, but Chrome. It basically looked like the OS loaded a browser to display an ad. That's all I know. I haven't seen it happen again since I removed that update. I could be wrong of course, but this is what seemed to happen.

Thanks for the info. I will hide 9929 now. I use ie11 a minute a day but chrome is my default browser. Might have to do without the security update part of 9929.

Yeah, since I use Chrome most of the time, I figured I could do without it too.

I experienced system hangs after installing KB3139929 on a Windows 7 Home Premium system with the registry setting added to block Windows 10. I found that I had to undo the registry setting for 9929 to install properly. So far I haven't seen any ads or nags. I technically have IE 11 as my default browser, though I use it only 2 or 3 times a year.

Last month I blocked some annoying Windows 10 ads appearing in Firefox/Chromium on msn.com using a custom ABP/uBO filter; those ads have not reappeared and were not related to 9929.

Yes, I'm not installing it, just hiding it because there's a chance that Microsoft "could" reissue KB3139929 at a later date, without the GWX nag.

KB3138612 originally was issued to supersede KB3135445 (according to Woody), which had a GWX Update component to it, yet it was revised on March 8th without the GWX item. So "maybe" the same thing will happen with KB3139929. Only time will tell.
