This one was removed by the batch file TS4H created here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thre...y-updates-to-avoid.379151/page-3#post-2533091 . Was it a security update?

    Sure!
But the stupid thing was that for Windows 7 they mixed a kernel security patch in "recommended" update KB3068708.
How stupid can Microsoft be to include a kernel security patch in an update not designated as "important" but as "recommended" and that has the main description "Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry". Argh!

    I know.
Because KB3068708 is an update that has the main description "Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry" lots of users haven't installed it or have removed it.

The KB3068708 article states "The Windows 7 offering also supports the kernel updates that were deployed separately to Windows 8.1 through security update 3045999."
I would say that for Windows 7 that is a security update, even though KB3068708 was not designated as "important" but only as "recommended".
    I think it's a mess.
As I said, how stupid can Microsoft be to include a kernel security patch in an update not designated as "important" but as "recommended" and that has the main description "Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry".

Nope, Microsoft wasn't stupid at all, in fact very clever. They know people want kernel security patches so how clever to bundle them in with the update "stuff". I got smart 3 years before I left XP. With one patch MS said you were at huge risk without the update. I thought wait a minute. Yesterday I was fine, and now I am at huge risk. Bull. That was the end of updates with XP. Ran 3 years without doing an update. I am pretty comfortable that with my security setup, I could stop with the win 7 updates and be fine.

For months now I have been running Win 8.1 without updates. Initially I kept checking the Windows folder for the $Windows~BT folder and it stayed away. Now I find that towards the end of November it has by passed my settings and is sitting there - so far 77 MB

I can start Outlook but my view settings are "lost" - reading pane disabled and to-do pane enabled. Even if I correct those settings after next Outlook run, they are set back. Didn't notice Excel problems so far...

Just noticed that Outlook 2010 is really run in safe mode and all setting changes are lost when app is closed. Just great...

Excel problems are just one machine. I have suggested a reboot when the user can. Only difference I can think of on that machine is they have 125% font sizes. The Outlook problem is on all 3 of the so far updated ones. They had better fix this fast.

I decided to restore an image and also disabled Windows Updates. Will try again in a week or so, hoping that they will fix it by the time.

Yeah, Office 2013 seems fine. Office 2010 is definitely borked by today's updates.

Thanks. I assumed someone would figure it out and I didn't have time to uninstall them to find out which one it was.

M$ buys borks in bulk. So they're giving them away!

"No problem here with Windows 10 updates", he says while ducking for cover from the hail of abuse coming from the Win10 haters.

    Kerodo,

Win10 is the sweetest OS I've used. Fast, stable. I cringe now when I look at Win7 or WinXP. Well, we liked them at the time.
