It is a Kamikazi type attack on W7 and W8.. I'd say not suicidal (as per Tokubetsu Kōgekitai) , but arguably a desperate attempt to meet market expectations.

Damn it, there I go being hysterical again.

    It's not win 7 that's the problem - it's M$ that's the problem.

Yeah, it really is.. I have used Win and MS products all my life, and liked both, but now, they're just plain out of control.

I guess I might as well be hysterical too... :)

Yes, I agree. It seems like they lost their compass.

No you're speaking the truth. It's just that the truth sounds implausible these days.

I got my Lenovo laptop from Amazon, they had several at the time. Some had dual boot Win7/Mint, Win7/Ubuntu OS's.

Ok, thanks, I will check Amazon out also. It occurred to me that I could also probably just buy a desktop at some place like Best Buy, and then wipe it and install whatever I wanted, but I'm not sure how the UEFI stuff works, or whether it would be a problem nowadays. Thanks though... :)

I could have bought a laptop with no OS but I wasn't sure if it was hardware compatible with Ubuntu. My desktop was custom built anyway. I don't know enough about specific hardware compatibilities with Linux software. It's one of the big problems with Linux. At least Lenovo deliberately ensure compatibility with their laptops.

That's what I'm a little nervous about too. There are a couple of places on the web that I've found that will build you a custom desktop guaranteed to run at least Ubuntu and Mint. I'd hate to just buy a computer and hope that it worked out. I'm still good with my Asus laptop here for now, but one day I'll need to buy again, and I'm just starting to research it now. I suspect it will take some time. And then of course there is Apple...

Yeah, I was a tad impatient though. Also, some hardware incompatibilities don't show or aren't apparent for a while.

It's best to have a desktop custom built specifically to work with Linux I think. I've had all of my desktop PC's custom built, although they ran Windows.

Maybe I'm lucky but I've never seen a computer that wouldn't run Ubuntu. I have it installed along with several Windows versions on our home computers.

Do either of you know if the UEFI boot stuff would be a problem for Ubuntu if I tried to install it on a store bought pc (a new pc)?

No problem for Ubuntu. You can install it in Legacy or UEFI mode.

It's worrying that we're updating our PC's, but we have no idea why.

I just did a UEFI Ubuntu 1510 install to an empty SSD. After successfully booting Ubuntu the OS partition was resized smaller and a slide was done on the Swap partition. Ubuntu still booted.

    There are 3 partitions...

    EFI
    Ubuntu
    Swap

Sounds great, thanks Brian. My next machine will definitely have an SSD too. That is probably a huge boost to performance. Almost wish I had one now on my laptop. :)
