OK, thanks. It would make sense that way but Microsoft still hasn't officially explained it. I had deleted the contents of the Software Distribution folder after installation but hidparse.sys is likewise in my System32/drivers folder. No USB attached. Understandably, I don't wanna test this theory either. :cautious:

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth in this context.

I came across this posting in a related thread over at bleepingcomputer.com:
Referring to my above posted screen shot and double checking hidparse.sys in System32/drivers directory modification date, it was modified as a result of the Win 10 Nov. cumulative update; not from the Dec. cumulative update.

This infers that that only devices where hidparse.sys was updated as a result of the Dec. cumulative update are affected. That is the Nov. cumulative update was not performed for whatever reason.

Again for me, this points to screw up by Microsoft in the Dec. cumulative driver cleanup processing specifically related to hidparse.sys since I had other drivers updated in the Dec. cumulative update.

OK, got it. Yes, that driver was likewise last modified here in November (Nov 8th), and not in this more recent KB (Dec). Good--that's settled. Hopefully, it gets sorted for those who were affected--blue screens are always such a nasty surprise.

Mine was also modified 8 Nov. Ironically, I forgot to unplug my USB drive when I ran the Dec. update but never had the described crash.

No problems on Win 10 installing the update today. Reboot required as usual.

No issues so far with Windows 10 or 11. I hesitate to update my domain controller after last year's January update.

Mercifully brief process on my Windows 10 drive, with about 2.5 GB to "clean." Not doing my Windows 11 yet--it's kind of a pain undoing everything, and then oops! A screw is loose in the box somewhere, etc, etc. :cautious::rolleyes:

I suppose there's an easier way but I'm too lazy to figure it out. As long as 10 runs well, which it does, it's not imperative to update 11 with the same speed.

KB50222352 failing to install on Windows Server 2012R2 domain controller. As I don't desire the pain it will probably bring to continue to try to force it I am going to skip it for now.

Anyone else having any Windows 10 issues today? I am having multiple Windows 10 PCs where the shortcuts claim there are no programs associated. The Windows 11 PCs seem to be fine. I booted up a Windows 10 PC that seemed ok but it was in the process of installing KB5022282. I shut it down without finishing. Not sure if that is an issue. Still gathering info.

No sure what happened but after a Macrium restore the problem came back. After a second restore I disabled Defender and installed Kaspersky. Seems to work now. I think it was a Defender false positive on MS Office.

Thanks. I had pretty much figured the same thing. I now officially consider myself a Defender hater. I hope they fix this so I don't have to restore backups for everything. Happy Friday the 13th...

Is this problem only in the Enterprise WD or are Home users affected as well?
