OK, I tried this and the critter was nowhere to be found. I'd deleted the downloads portion of the Software Distribution folder and reset the update components via PowerShell.

I saw that 2 error reports and some kind of "upload" were sent to Microsoft (Control Panel/Maintenance/Report problems). So this appears to be the telemetry I'm hoping will isolate the issue and allow the revised update to install some day.

    Remains to be seen. :)

I've actually found a PC with the exact same problem. If I find a solution I'll post but like you I assume this will have to be fixed with a future update.

omg, thank you! I bookmarked the linked page b/c I'm going to wait a little while longer to see if this resolves.

I have a feeling, though, I'm gonna need that link down the road.

Great, very reassuring. :thumb: If/when I use this method, I'll post an update on the outcome.

Update: Went to UUPDump. I attempted to download via aria2 (run as administrator) and this is the message I get:

A bit disappointing. I'll try again later today. Last thing I want to do is clean-install. The. Last.

I'd say try again later. Something must have been offline. It all worked fine for me. The .iso it made was 5.69 GB so it is too big for me to post anywhere.

OK, thanks for your continued help, xxJackxx. Just today there is "official" acknowledgement from Microsoft about this, with a note that an upcoming fix is slated for April's Patch day. So, if I can't get this ISO decently, at least there's a fix in the works. :)

    https://blogs.windows.com/windows-i...dows-10-build-19043-906-21h1-to-beta-channel/

I have a static image but it needs to be updated and I have too many games to want to reinstall them. So it's a relief this is acknowledged.

Edit: It's KB5000842, not 8000... as I'd prev. posted, that's a typo. Also, to clarify, Microsoft is intending to issue a new cumulative update to address this failure, which may not necessarily take place on Patch day. But hopefully soon.

All seems well after updating to 19042.906 (a few minutes ago). Done Via Settings.

Microsoft has released the KB5000842 non-security preview update for all editions of Windows 10, version 20H2, and Windows 10, version 2004, with fixes for system freezing and activation issues.
After installing this cumulative update, you may experience issues with the system and user certificates getting lost if updating from Windows 10 1809 or later versions using outdated install media.

Well, after trying repeatedly to install KB5000842, I gave up, backed up some things and reset this machine. After that, the update came back into the queue eventually and with some dread, I watched it d/l and install in fits and starts. Upon restarting, in the completing installation phase, there was the dreaded "cleaning up" message which leads you to believe once again it didn't make it. But winver does show I'm up to date finally.

    So annoying.

Congrats to everyone who installed this successfully. :)

I downloaded this manually on a few machines and was not able to install it. At home, I grabbed it as the Optional Update under Windows Updates and it installed with no issue. Strange.

I just updated Windows 10 20H2 and Office 2019 and so far didn't encounter any problems.

Well after that malformed KB50000842 which had me resetting this computer (I hate being behind in updates), I was seeing this update KB5001330 hanging at 21% and 45% but then went in bursts. Winver is 19043.928 for Insiders beta. Also got an MSRT.

There was only like 540 MB of cleanup via DiskCleanup. So, I used: Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase to recoup almost all of the rest. Hmmm, think I'll do this exclusively in the future; DiskCleanup seems to be deprecated on here.

Did you happen to test Storage sense also? Does it find similar amount of data to be removed as Disk cleanup or more?

Minimalist: oh good question--I ran Storage Sense maybe four months ago and I know that it doesn't delete the contents of the SoftwareDistribution--Download folder. The rest? Can't recall, I'll have to try it again next time there's a cumulative update. Also not sure if Insider Beta and Release are identical in this respect.

    So, my cleanup routine: --Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase
AND delete contents of SoftwareDistribution folder--"Download" folder only.

restores the missing GBs. :) Would be nice if there was a batch file for this, right?

    Thanx @plat1098

After running that command: if you run 'Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /AnalyzeComponentStore' - what storage it shows on your system in Backup and Disabled features section? IS this affected by /resetbase switch?
