Thank you kindly for the exhaustive rundown on 20H2, Spartan. After tootling around with this decision for a couple of weeks now, I signed up for the Beta channel. 20H2 is downloading as I speak.

Even though 2004 is running fine, I'm ready to let it go. :)

Edit: Wow, just missed the 5 minute cutoff for editing without the "edit" message. Anyway, it's done and dusted. Good start: the disk optimization issue is showing correctly now. On the other hand, I'm still getting a splatter of ESENT id 642 warnings ,esp. on start/restart. Winver is 19042.487. Running very fast. :thumb:

Is there something you need to do to enable this? Or is it hardware independent? Not seeing it on my laptop.

If you don't see it, that means your video card driver is old. What is your GPU / Driver version?

Well, my gpu is about four years old but it met the driver requirements--as per mood's post, the NVIDIA driver should be minimum 451.48. So for AMD, likely the same.

So here is the gpu scheduler in 2009, via Settings/System/Display/Graphics Settings. It was enabled right after 2009 was installed.

Don't really see any difference "off" versus "on" but the article in mood's post indicated it was not a performance thing anyway. So I'm a little confused as to why it would mention this performance improvement in the snip-spoiler. Should've left that out if it was only an indirect impact.

That's pretty cool. Yeah I dunno why it is not enabled for me. But it is a laptop so it has both AMD and Intel GPU's which is annoying to say the least.

I've just updated version 2004 to build 19041.487, and I'm pleased to see that the Defragment and Optimize tool's bug has been fixed.

Did you click 'Check for updates'? I thought you were still running 1909, it may not be available for this version.

Then maybe I received the update because I joined the insider program 'release preview channel', although the update is for version 2004...

Ahh that is likely it. Hopefully it comes out soon for the rest of us. I am a Windows Insider but don't want to login on my personal machine.

I would expect it to work.

Also, the defrag is absolutely fixed in the latest 20H2 build. I just checked it again to be sure.

Hmm. Maybe I will try tonight. I tried it with a different cab file I found but it failed.

Question. So since we are running H2, what happens when 2009 goes final? We are not in the Insider etc so do we need to whack our machines? Or will it change to 2009 somehow?

If the previous cab file failed try renaming it to something shorter and putting it on the root of a drive. The path can be too long if you run it from the wrong place.

You be fine when it goes final. I have done this many times before.

That is good to know. I will try it again tonight when I get home. At work I am running 20H2 already.

Reg edit still is not working for me to install these cab files. Installed both via command line and am now running Windows 10 20H2 Build 19042.487

    Thanks!
