I'm not a pro and not even an advanced amateur, but I wanted to check your continuous criticism of MS coding, and I decided to spend a few hours testing out your beloved Linux MX with its live DVD... Well it went quite well, idiot proof until suddenly everything froze to the point I had to kill the whole thing with a hard restart... Okay it can happen I guess, but it never ever happened with Windows 10 or any other Windows versions in the past. Should I have investigated the reasons of the crash? Maybe, but why wasting more time of my precious life on something that can't install properly as a clean install in the first place? And furthermore I hate to think what would happen if Linux MX was to be installed on 600 million+ machines world wide...

So you compare an installed OS with a live CD, really?

I did hundreds of Linux installs, never had your issue, you were just unlucky. Since you didn't try again, I bet you weren't really serious about testing it, probably you just wanted to make a argument.

Btw, are you familiar with installing Linux? Or was it your first try?
Unlike Windows, there is dozen of Linux version where you could successfully install it.

Just Google : "Windows 10 cant install"...

And please check my sig, unlike you, I don't draw conclusion after a 10mn test...
My criticisms are based on proven facts and experiences both with businesses and home users.

    Thanks to pass by.

Yes I do, that is what a live CD is supposed to demonstrate before a proper installation
To make an argument is a personal insult to you, why would I want to do that anyway, I don’t know you
Come on man, I have installed many distros of Linux through the years and I understand why they never went mainstream, they are hopeless…
As I said I am not a pro as you claim to be, but if Linux is so great and free, it would have a greater impact in the real world, but sadly it is around 1 %, that is all distros, sigh!!!

Sure, but it aren't comparable. Install both, use them for some months, then you can talk.

I don't have to claim, I am from my jobs lol.
Btw, i don't see what is wrong to be a professional lol. Note that i never claimed to be an expert.

As home user OS, Linux is not as popular as Windows not because it is so bad, but because Windows was adopted way earlier and pushed by oem vendors , is less "geeky" , and people are used to it.

It is same situation as Windows Mobile VS Android. Windows mobile was a gem, way better than Android Imo, but came too late.

Note that Linux/Unix variants overthrow Windows in the industry, it is everywhere: Android, home equipments, IoT, servers, robotics, etc...

And BTW, what did Linux has to do in the discussion?
It is not because I criticize an OS than the it means the others I use are perfect. I can and did criticized Linux.
If you used both for long times, Linux is way less buggy and more stable, I don't even talk about security... Now for versatility, it is another topic.

If i have to choose an OS for daily usage, I would choose Chrome OS over Linux or Windows.

Sorry, if you perceive it that way, I'm not emotionally attached to a brand like many in forums defending their beloved product at all cost while hating the other as much...I just point the obvious and MS make it worse at every builds introducing half-baked inconvenient/buggy features. You can't deny that.

The cherry on the cake: Memory Integrity so badly implemented that you can't turn it off to use a VM or some security softs.. Ludicrous..

Got kb 4482887 and 4486553 through check for updates, they installed, prompt me to restart, we couldn't complete the updates, undoing changes, error 0x800F0922. Cool windows, cool. Disabled secure boot. Then the .net framework update installed successfully, apparently this one doesn't need a restart, but 4482887 failed, this time with error 0x80070020. Did the steps here: https://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-update-install-error-0x80070020 , however this cleared my update history :( Maybe I should have backed it up... It's likely the dberr.txt file in catroot2 folder, thought it could be one in the softwaredistribution folder. Then, while installing kb4482887, I got 2 prompts from simplewall:

    1.png

However, I had deleted smartscreen.exe, it's part of my bat with tweaks, and the fact that this file was back, well I definitely did not like this...

Oh yeah, and kb4482887 failed again, couldn't complete the updates, undoing changes, with the same error as the 1st time 0x800F0922. According to this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10587/windows-10-get-help-with-upgrade-installation-errors , this error may be caused by too small system partition. My EFI System Partition is 100mb, with 70mb of them free after disabling secure boot. Anyway I followed the steps here https://www.thewindowsclub.com/we-couldnt-update-system-reserved-partition . After that I had 83 mb free, kinda doubt that was the problem, but never hurts to try. Well I was wrong, it wasn't the reason, failed again with undoing changes... I still have many things left to troubleshoot, maybe tomorrow...

Appears there was an upgrade to it in this cumulative update. Mine shows a creation date of today.

Yeah, when I solve the issue with the update (it's almost like it happens frequently...) I'll use wizfile and see which files were modified, to make sure nothing sneaks by :D

Without explicitly checking for updates, still on Win10 v1803.

CU KB4489868, now on build 17134.648. Plus Flash and some Office updates.

So my (maybe dumb) question is ... when can we expect the 'automatic' rollout of v1809, that is, without explicitly checking for updates? o_O

    Paul,

Do you really want 1809 as 1903 will be available in a month? If you don't like 1903 you can restore "yesterday's" image.

v1903 is fine (I'm normally an early adopter!), but I'm just wondering why MS still aren't rolling out 1809 automatically.

Maybe MS are just skipping it altogether for v1903 now?

Woody posted on twitter that Microsoft just acknowledged an Internet Explorer bug in all of this month's Win10 cumulative updates, and in the Monthly Rollups for Win7 and 8.1.
    Symptom:

After installing this security update, Custom URI Schemes for Application Protocol handlers may not start the corresponding application for local intranet and trusted sites on Internet Explorer.

    Workaround:

Right-click the URL link to open it in a new window or tab.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
