@xxJackxx Have you tried doing a clean boot, with all startup items and all non Microsoft services disabled?

    No, Not AMD. It's Intel-i5-3320M
You maybe right about about MSE put in the registry setting. Thanks!

I ran Windows7-sp1-64bit today. Enabled win update service and got
KB4056894, the meltdown job of Jan.4, installed, rebooted.
KB4055532 .NET job of Jan.18. installed, rebooted.
All seems well at this point.

Under optional, recent KBs were - I ignore those
    KB4057270 - .NET of Jan.18
    KB4057400 - rollup preview of Jan.19

    Thank you, Bo.
It looks like M$ did its thing, so I didn't have to go the calatog way.
See my reply to Minimalist, above.

OT: Funny thing, I don't consider MSE to be AV. I suppose it is, it updates itself and signatures and I have to deal with alerts from Outpost because M$ keeps changing the file name all the time.

I have. Thanks but no luck. I ended up getting the most recent cumulative update for the Anniversary update installed (the last build that worked on this PC) while at the same time I killed the process for the Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor. After that update and a reboot it doesn't seem to be trying again but tomorrow is another day. A new PC would be nice. This is the second one I have had to fight with on the fall update. I hope they are better at this moving forward.

Only available from the MS Catalog - hmmmm. Not delivered through Windows Update.
    - I think I'll pass on this one. Way too mysterious.

I just have no idea what Microsoft has done with the last two January security updates to mitigate Spectre variant 2.

I have a question. I installed the Microsoft Meltdown/Spectre patches in my computers (W7 and W10). I havent installed anything from Intel in either computer.

Do I need to install KB 4078130? My thinking is that since I haven't updated the BIOS, I dont need KB 4078130.

If you haven't updated the bios recently (=no updated microcode), then you don't need to install KB4078130.

Thanks, for confirming what I thought.

I did a clean install today of 1709 and got this 258 update instead of the older 892 update, so I'm assuming 258 is a replacement for 892 and that it corrects problems and issues people had with 892. 258 installed fine here...

As far as KB1058258 goes, it is a "quality improvement." As such, it is not a replacement for KB4056892.
Assumed is KB4056892 is included in the build you downloaded.

I tried the Jan4 patches (win7) slowed down the system when running games. Went back and forward with the patch, noticed the slow-down.

Luckily i saved the image before the rushed updates.

No way will i update the bios, don't want to fry my machine.

MS is probably hoping for this outcome, to sell win +3.

My experience with January patches in both, W7 and W10 was perfect. I cant tell any difference in performance doing what I regularly use the computers for, etc, but I dont do games. No issue.

Regarding the BIOS updates. If I get them done, it ll be long time from now. I ll probably would feel more at ease to get them done via MS updates. But the only time I did a BIOS update (in my first W7) was via WU and that did not work out well. I ended up resetting that computer to factory.

A follow up for anyone that may be curious, we tracked the issue down to the WiFi adapter. Fortunately it was removable so we took it out and it updated fine from there.

Actually, I just installed the 1709 build I had from last October when I created it with the Media Creation Tool at that time, so there was no new build downloaded. I installed 1709 and ran Win Updates and there was no sign of the 892 update at all. Just the new 258. This is after multiple update checks and a final check for good measure. 258 was the last one to come in. That's it...

Were you online when you installed 1709? Maybe 892 was installed as Windows was installing?

If you are up to winver 16299.214 (and you are probably are), you are not missing anything. Check your version.

If you want opinions, I think you are fine and can give it a Go.
