My Registry had the correct Registry setting so I Manually DLed the Meltdown Security patch - I had no offer from m$ to install it. Win 7 64 Pro.

My machine was borked up big time (screen froze, mouse pointer froze) and had to Cold reboot. Kept freezing up. Though I am not/was not running everything at the same time I started uninstalling softs ** til I got it to run again. Have no idea what the conflict was/is but it now has ran for > 15 hours with no problems.

** I removed: HitmanPro, HitmanPro.Alert, Malware Bytes, MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit, Exe Radar, OSArmor and Bitdefender

And have been reviewing Event and other Logs to try to ID what happened.

There are tons of reports that machines are Bricking all over the place - in particular many reports for AMDs.

With Meltdown, Spectre (these were actually discovered in June of 2017) and the late '17 horror stories about Intel IME, my spooked up level is ~ 10.

I don't use all of these security programs at once :D, but a layered combo on different machines.

Two machines with very similar setup, no problem on one. But that one indeed doesn't have ERP (or MZWriteScanner or AppCheck).

I do have daily images but not a clean Windows 10 image (laptop was upgraded from Win 8.1), and am reluctant to do a clean install (so many customisations ), but will try reinstall of KB4056892, and with clean boot, etc. Or try Driver Verifier, which I have seen mentioned in relation to this BSOD.

Probably the wrong terminology, my bad, but I definitely had OS problems when I tested ERP NoVirusThanks, WoodooShield, and the latest Faronics AE. Once uninstalled those problems disappeared. I'm not suggesting AE are not good security programs, but in some systems they just create too many problems...

Is your machine an Intel or an AMD system?

It gets worse: Microsoft’s Spectre-fixer bricks some AMD PCs

The patches installed fine on my AMD Phenom processor.

Also, I was never offered the update via Win Updates in spite of my AV vendor being one of the first to set the required reg key.

I will say this. If you have an AMD processor, you don't need the patches. AMD processors are not vulnerable to the Meltdown exploit. AMD has publically stated that your chances of getting nailed by a Spectre attack are next to nill.

I might just never install another ms patch again because of these blue screens and borking problems for W7 after installing the 6894 meltdown patch.

It took me ~ 1 hour to figure things out. Average user would have no freaking clue.

Win7 Meltdown patch KB 4056894 and Win10 1709 cumulative update KB 4056892 throwing blue screens, errors 0X000000C4 and 0x800F0845. AMD Athlon worst hit, but other processors are getting bit, too.

I've tried 4 times to install 2018-01 Security Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4056887)

Fails each time at 45% although the Malicious Software Removal Tool went in OK.

Time for a restart and a good shout at the machine :D

On Windows 7 x64 I installed Cumulative Update 01-2018, Office 2010 Updates and .NET Cumulative Update with no noticeable problems. Intel CPU and Emsisoft AM here. Updated Sandboxie to latest beta also.

    Hello,

I am assuming that Windows 10 Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.192) is still the current version after today's updates? I was only offered two updates today:
    • Windows Update KB890830 (Windows MSRT)
    • Windows Update KB4056887 (Adobe Flash Player)
This makes me assume that last Thursday's (January 4, 2017) "emergency" Windows Update KB4056892 not only contains the fixes for Meltdown and Spectre, but also the "normal" patch Tuesday updates? The information that I have found seems to suggest that this is the case, but I can not find anything definitive. Can anyone confirm that this is indeed correct? I had to install KB4056892 manually as for some reason it was not being offered for my machine and just want to be sure that I am up to date.

That is a case with Windows 7, so I assume that situation with Windows 10 is similar.

It will also include MS Office updates if you have that installed.

The "big question" is when will the recent NVidia graphics card security updates i.e. ver. 390 be available via Win Updates? My currently installed ver. is 388.

    Hello,

Thanks @itman but even though I like and prefer Microsoft Office, it is a bit rich for this poor disabled man's blood :) so I must go with the free alternatives...
