It's for business not consumers, but yes.

Run disk cleaner as an ADMINISTRATOR. Should cleanup outdated updates. Again read from my former post "Yes I run disk cleaner "AS an ADMINISTRATOR" after a windows update. More about disk cleaner here. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2852386"

That Download folder located in %Windir%\SoftwareDistribution is nothing more than download cache folder for windows updates. It's 100% safe to delete any content in that folder and deleting those files does not delete any updates that are currently installed on your pc via windows updates.

If you wan't to delete old not needed update packages run this command via cmd (administrator):
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup (this command does reduce size of your WinSxS folder)

Is there any advantage to doing it manually Vs using the option in the Disk Cleanup tool?

Have done it both ways. I usually use CCleaner with option to include \C:Windows/Software DistributionDownload\all files\include files and subfolders. I have CCleaner to clean with advanced overwright 3 passes which takes a bit longer than doing it manually.

So are you saying you don't see any advantage one way or the other?

    hi
but deleting C:Windows/Software DistributionDownload does not take any advantage
as soon you start to check for new update the folder are re-popolated

Once more, if you want to uninstall and update this is what I do.
Just want to add, if you have a good backup before Aug. updates maybe you should run it. Just a thought.

mantra, I've never seen that in any computer. After the updates have been installed they aren't downloaded again. Which OS are you running?

I haven't tried it, but I'm guessing he means the folders inside the "SoftwareDistribution" folder reappear - perhaps after running Windows Update (?) - and not the updates inside of the download folder.

OK, you should delete the contents of the Download folder. Don't delete the Download folder.
