tell me one product that doesn't need a lot of work on it.

This product is free, it is very good and for me that is a great starting place. Bitdefender created the best free AV on the market and it is still young. Give them some time.

Like other cloud based products, BDF keeps a small local database of important definitions, so when the user goes offline, he/she is still protected.

thanks.....would you explain more about "small local database of important definition"
what does "important" mean? does it mean database of widespread threats?

My guess would be whatever threats that Bitdefender deems as the most common.

honestly, they don't have to do a thing to this product for me. It does everything I could ask for, and more. It doesn't matter if it doesn't dice and make julienne fries.

Honestly, this may be the best product on the market, paid or free.

I have preached for years about, if you want to sell a product to a mass market, keep it simple, simple, simple. That is the only way people can know they are protecting their computers with little PC knowledge. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. I said it before and will say it again, if this were a paid product I would already own a license for it.

I like the concept and idea of keeping it simple, so I agree on that. But it does need a few things, restore from quarantine, for example, and maybe a couple of config options also, like maybe the ability to turn off the web scanning. They could add just a few little details like that, and I'd be all set with it too. But until then.. sorry, can't go with it. And to be honest, I don't really see them making the changes anyway. I guess that's why we joke about it... I mean really, almost any programmer could easily add those things in a week.

I think Bitdefender Free is the starter drug. If you want restore or optional webshield you have to buy at least Bitdefender Antivirus Plus. An option "ask before quarantine files" would be better than anything else! :thumb:

The only problem with your starter drug theory is that they already promised a restore function was coming soon. Also, BD Free seems to be able to detect web issues as it will block malicious/suspicious sites.

Well, based on my experience with the free product, if that is representative of their work, then I wouldn't want to buy any of the paid products...

Yes, that's even better, but I didn't want to ask for too much... lol... Plus that seems to go against their design philosophy of keeping decisions out of the hands of the user.

Folks, you must realize one thing: It's not about offering a free product, it's about getting more malware samples and work out more false positives. :D *puppy*

BAF is the perfect project for that task. It worked fine for the Romanian users, now they're spreading. Why do you think it took them all this time to provide an English version? Come'on... they had to be sure! *puppy*

Yeah, m00nbl00d, I think you're probably right. There is literally no movement (development) on the free product for a long time now, and zero discussion of it from them. So yes, I tend to agree.. which pretty much makes all of the free product users suckers I guess... lol.

This is true and not. Yes, a free product is the basis for making your paid products better, Microsoft even uses this theory, but. You cant just develop a product and forget it because the whole purpose of why you created it will dry up as folks bail on it for lack of development.

I hate to say it but Avast has performed this to perfection. All products are equally developed in each version. So the end user, no matter which they select, knows that Avast has put as much into developing the product of choice, as all the others. If Bitdefenders feels that they created a seed and fail to develop it into a flower, then all of the old justified negative judgements on how they create their products, will be justified.

To me, this is the nail in the coffin for them. The Gonzales team was a new fresh start for BD to prove that they actually have the marketing ability to stand on 2 feet with all of their products. The success of BDAV free will send that signal, just as the failure of it, will just add food for thought for those who feel differently.

Their quandry is just the opposite of most vendors. They are guilty until proven innocent and BDAV free was there best piece of evidence of late, to start this process.
