I always liked the idea of a "layered approach" but today some of these standalone AV, Security suites etc go way behind the call of duty. This particular free AV is a "malware virus killing machine". :argh:

Would it work if I disabled Defense+ or am I better off using Windows firewall instead?

The product is really still in the beta stages isn't it.

I am using BD Free with ZoneAlarm Firewall free & the combination works very well. I really like Bit Defender. Remember to get rid of Forcefield & that ridiculous Zone Alarm Tool bar first though. Yes it certainly does identify & kill virus"

Hi guys, long time no see!

I've recently returned to the security scene after becoming a full time parent to a pair of beautiful twins!

I've totally missed BDAF. I thought I'd give it a try. So far it's been blocking every piece of malware I've thrown at it (~150 samples). I'd say that paired with Windows 8 SmartScreen filter I'm totally safe while my girlfriend (or by any means, any guest that may use my computer) browse the web.

I am delighted to see that BitDefender developed this neat and seemingly good and free anti-malware software. It's on par with WSA in my internal system performance tests and yet provides a better protection all put together.

Good job, and I look forward seeing this software continue developing.

    Wow, that's good.

It is kind of sad that it has problems with other real-time programs, but with some browser add-ons, coupled with MBAM and HMP for on-demand scans, I'd say it's pretty good by itself.

Just a small question but (in the future) will BitDefender Free be OPSWAT-certified? It's not a big deal for me, although I would like to improve my score in OPSWAT's security score utility. :p

I wanna download it in the worst way because lots of people brag about its detection rates but I can't quite bring myself to remove Comodo Firewall. Will be great when it becomes compatible with other security programs.

I'm not sure I've seen malware pass this program yet, for YT tests, or my own testing. In terms of protection, it seems rock solid.

Perhaps if I get impatient enough and the compatibility issue doesn't get solved with CFW I'll go back to the Windows firewall. I have a feeling it will be the best free antivirus on the market like someone else said.

Just removed COMODO and installed BD Free. Made my computer kind of sluggish, but probably because it was updating for the first time, plus it needs to build its cache.

Memory usage was 100 MB, but it fell to 25 MB.

I also don't like the whole registration thing. Avast! does it too, but I don't recall Avast! being hacked anytime recently.

Again! Thanks a lot you guys (and of course girls)!

I've encountered some problems with Bitdefender Antivirus Free. I've been running my desktop hours at a time, and since installation, the signatures haven't updated yet. I know I read somewhere in this thread that it's supposed to check for updates on an hourly basis.

Of course, it could be that no new updates have been released since yesterday, but I highly doubt it. My protection hasn't been updated since installations.

See picture for "proof" of issue.

Date and time now: 2013-02-12, 3:25 PM CET.

I advise you to forget this software which acts like closed beta stage product, go check avast 8 beta instead

I disagree. I advise to stay with this product for a while. It is absolutely amazing. It's on par with Prevx 3 when it was released a few years back...! And that is strong words coming from a security guy who spends a lot of time testing security products.

So far I've tested over 320 samples... and Bitdefender free + SmartScreen Filter blocked them all. :)
