Then I'd sure love to know what ghost in my machine was trying to play Peggle and Bookworm Adventures..because I sure wasn't, and BD was merrily scanning their folders while I was simply wandering through Wilders :D

This is a strange situation; there can be two posible explanations here:

    - the .NET framework starts at dome point to rebuild it's caches / re-compile stuff; we have no control over its processes and can take some time to finish

    - or, the AutoScan, when running the Full Cycle, is impacting the system, although none of our test showed any performance degradation..
    We'll re-check/re-test the EmptySlots/LoadUsage modules.
Also, as I already said, we're working on an idea to reduce the Full/Quick Scan duration to just a fraction of the current one.

I think you looked at the Virus Shield module, not AutoScan; maybe it's a problem with semantics? Should we pick another sentence instead of Auto Scan? We first thought of "Continuos Scan", but this will scare the user :)

Regarding Manual Scan (Right click), I already said that this also scan Memory?Processes (for reasons that I cannot write here), but we'll change this to be less intrusive

Make a password protected archive (usually, the "infected" passw is chosen) with those files and submit this archive to me (PM)

Installed Bitdefender Antivirus Free in my father and sister's laptop, and I can't seem to download CCleaner using any browsers. It just "stalls". Disabling the protection solved the "problem".

Many AV/Security Suites are in the "race" of ignoring/not scanning files as much as they can, thru:
    - extension; e.g. don't scan .log, .txt; but one command interpretor can open that file and execute/interprete those commands.. so..
    - file type; e.g. jpg, pdf
    - exclude files accessed by known processes; e.g. SearchIndexer; but what if "someone" inject a code/creates a thread inside SearchIndexer process?

Gonzales project (and Paid versions too) were designed to be as bulletproof as they can be (so, no part of protection is "sacrificed") and from this point to make steps in reduce system impact to minimum

Why I am saying this intro?
BDAVFree is simply scans what the system is accessing; if SearchIndexer is looking over your Picture folder, our file driver will also raise a scan of those files..
There is no funny/obscure/whatever "feature" of the VirusShield, other than "scan all accessed files"

BDAV free is just awesome. On Windows XP, 2 GB RAM, Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 Ghz no slowdowns, on Vista with same specification as well. During scans max 10% of processor is used (usually about 7%). Maximum protection without any configuration - excellent for basic user. I was looking for as simple product as it could be with highest protection level. I was using MSE before, but you know, protection is just medium. I have four questions:
    1. Is protection offered by free edition the same as paid versions (for example detection rate)?
    2. Can I register few free editions on one MyBitdefender account?
    3. Is there any way to see what kind of malware is blocked by the webblocker (as it is in paid versions)?
    4. Are there other language locations planned to be added?
    Thanks in advance!

This is not only good for basic users but for "advanced" users too. Experienced users are careful whith what they install and surf, so why should they install a full blown sluggish internet security suite with all kind of features and tweaks if this AV detects the same, is lightweight and simple to use?

Yes, I was looking at the Virus Scan section, and wondering why it was scanning files on another partition which hadn't even been accessed. Seems odd..

Regarding right click scan, yes, that would be great... On a simple right click scan of a file or folder, it's nice if it does it quick and only scans the file or folder.

One other comment... Auto Scan takes about an hour and a half here, and I don't even have that many files. Doing this daily seems like overkill. How about once a week? Or configurable? I don't want to get rid of it, I think it's good, but just do it less often.

Ok, thanks for that clarification. Indeed, it must be something in the system (Win) that is accessing those files, and thus causing BD to scan them. That makes sense. Just wanted to be sure... :)

I would give this a try in a heartbeat if it weren't for the fact it may possibly delete files that aren't harmful, potentially causing damage to the computer.

It has been stated earlier that it has protections against deleting system files.

Thanks for the reply. I ended up disabling the auto-scan and that seemed to have fixed the issue on my machine. I know that there is an issue with the auto-scan being disabled and BDF not being able to finish cleaning a threat, but right now, I will have to live with it.

If you guys can get a grip on the auto-scan vs performance issue on the next build, I believe you will have the best AV on the market, free or not. :thumb:

Is it already pre-configured that way or do I have to set that up manually?

There is nothing to configure. Install it and you're done.

I thought I saw earlier in the thread where if it deletes any false positives then the computer is screwed. Otherwise I'd like to give it a try.

As Brandon has stated, BDF has built in safe guards to prevent that.

    That's good.

So if I were to get this, should I uninstall Panda Cloud and Comodo Firewall?

Well Panda Cloud for sure obviously but what about Comodo Firewall?

PCA yes, uninstall prior to installation, and as for CFW I don't have any first hand experience with both running together, so that will be your choice. ;)
