Is the detection of the free edition Bitdefender (version 8 ) the same as the premium version of Bitdefender, as I notice version 8 is over a year old?

It may be slightly lower but I think it should be relatively similar. That's what the virus.gr tests led me to believe. BD9 was like 96% and BD8 was 95%, approx.

Only the heuristic engine is a little bit different.

The difference was the "malware" (Adware, DoS, Constructors, Exploit, Flooders, Nukers, Sniffers, SpamTools, Spoofers, Virus Construction Tools, Droppers, PolyEngines) detection. BitDefender 8 detected 5163 samples, while BitDefender 9 detected 6717.

    Thanks for the replies.

As btman noted above, that link does not work.

I would strongly recomend upgrading to BD 10 - the heuristics engine is GREATLY improved, especially in speed, and has improved spyware detection over the version 8 tool. Also, v.10 has rootkit detection built-in which makes it a bit handier to have around :)

Basically BitDefender 9 has much better spyware, riskware and rootkit detection than BitDefender 8. BitDefender 10 also improves heuristical spyware detection and adds special technology for removing rootkits.

Will the free version forever be v8 or will it be upgraded?

Doesn't look like the v.8 engine will ever be overhauled; sorry.
