In separate cases, two men who caused bone fractures to pedestrians while riding their electric scooters on shared paths were dealt with in court on Wednesday (Sept 11) — with one getting time behind bars, and the other a fine.
Prime mover driver Tan Gim Moh, 61, was sentenced to 18 days’ jail after pleading guilty to causing grievous hurt to Ms Tan Peck Lay, 58, by a rash act last year in Yishun.

Seeking at least three weeks’ jail, the prosecutor noted a recent spate of accidents involving e-scooter riders colliding into pedestrians.
Since February this year, personal mobility device users have been required by law to keep within 25km/h on shared paths and 10km/h on footpaths.

Uber's bright red Jump bikes will no longer be seen on the streets of San Diego and Atlanta.

The company has confirmed it will soon pull its ride-share bikes from those two cities. Over the summer, both San Diego and Atlanta ratcheted up regulations on shareable bikes and electric scooters.

Stuffed inside a press release between news of Mercedes-Benz-branded over-the-ear headphones and a toy version of the company’s EQC electric SUV is a brief mention of the forthcoming e-scooter. Seriously, here’s every word Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler wrote about the new scooter: [...]
No word on range, top speed, or any other specs. It seems the company will sell them in Germany, but it’s not clear if it will try to crack other markets or how much it will charge.

SINGAPORE - In a Facebook post, the panel’s head Dr Faishal Ibrahim expressed his sadness about the death of Madam Ong and urged the Government to mandate a theory test, ban the use of mobile phones unless mounted or used in a hands-free manner, and impose a minimum age requirement of 16 for all e-scooter riders on public paths.
Those below the age of 16 can ride under adult supervision, he added.

The set of recommendations also includes mandating businesses to procure third-party liability insurance to cover e-scooter riders who are riding in the course of work.
“In the year ahead, the Panel will actively monitor the situation and prepare the industry and community to move towards mandatory insurance for all e-scooter users,” Dr Faishal wrote.

Police in Fort Lauderdale, Florida have arrested a man who allegedly cut the brake lines on dozens of public scooters this year. The man has been identified by police as 59-year-old Randall Thomas Williams of Fort Lauderdale, though a possible motive has not yet been released.

The arrest was first reported by NBC Miami, which notes that local police say 140 e-scooters have had their brakes cut in the area this year. Williams has been linked to twenty of the vandalized scooters and has allegedly caused roughly $1,400 in damage, according to police. But there are dozens of other incidents that appear to fit the same pattern dating back to April.

Police checkpoints set up around the city’s 16-day-long Oktoberfest celebrations caught hundreds of intoxicated motorists squiggling their way down a street or a sidewalk.
The biggest problem officers encountered were e-scooters, according to German newspaper Deutsche Welle. They’re all over the place in Munich, as they are in most big German cities, so they were banned from entering the Oktoberfest beer gardens due to safety concerns.

Outside of the festival, 414 people were caught riding e-scooters drunk, and 254 of them lost their driver’s license because of it. Marcus da Gloria Martins, a spokesman for Munich’s police department, told Deutsche Welle many of the city’s residents see the e-scooters as a lifestyle product or a toy, and use them without realizing an offense committed on two wheels can end up their driving record.

Coming Tuesday to the streets of San Francisco: a couple thousand electric scooters from Uber and three other companies, about a year-and-a-half after the city banned e-scooters.
Three of the four companies that were granted permits are getting a second chance: Lime, Spin and Bird — which has since bought Scoot — were ordered to cease operations in San Francisco last summer after complaints about the scooters blocking already congested sidewalks or being parked on the streets.

Among the requirements the companies must meet, according to SFMTA documents: track and submit regular reports about problems and complaints, plus how parts are recycled and resold; use workers who are classified as part-time or full-time employees; comply with the city’s environmental policies; be available in disadvantaged communities; and more.

Scoot, owned by Bird, has just unveiled what it’s calling the Scoot Moped.

At first glance, it appears to be Bird’s two-seater vehicle. In June, Bird unveiled the Cruiser, which can seat up to two people and be pedal-assist or just have a peg, depending on the market.
While the Scoot Moped is meant for one person, the design and engineering of the Scoot Moped were based on the Bird Cruiser, according to Scoot.
Initially, the Scoot Moped will be available in Los Angeles as part of a pilot program. Later this year, the plan is to roll them out into other cities. Riders must be at least 18 years old and wear a helmet, which comes with each moped rental.

In an industry where unit economics and rider utilization are key to running a profitable business, perhaps it’s better to cut your losses early on. Lyft notified employees today that it’s pulling its scooters from six markets: Nashville, San Antonio, Atlanta, the Phoenix area, Dallas and Columbus.

“We’re choosing to focus on the markets where we can have the biggest impact,” a Lyft spokesperson told TechCrunch. “We’re continuing to invest in growing our bike and scooter business, but will shift resources away from smaller markets and toward bigger opportunities.”
This is the second round of layoffs in the bikes and scooters division this year. In March, Lyft laid off around 50 people, mostly those who came on board from Motivate following Lyft’s acquisition of the company last year.

Bird wants to get ahead of those concerns. The company announced Tuesday that it was rolling out the Helmet Selfie product to encourage riders to start wearing helmets.

Here's how the initiative works: At the end of a scooter ride, users are asked to take a selfie. The new add-on allows the app to register whether the rider is wearing a helmet, and if so, award them incentives like future ride credits.
The company said the new initiative was intended to address some of the safety concerns raised by partner cities and safety experts.

The return of the electric Citi Bike is nigh! Several thousand pedal-assist electric bikes were yanked from service last April after “dozens” of people were injured due to harder-than-expected brakes. But now the brakes are fixed, and hundreds of e-bikes will begin appearing at docking stations across the city starting this winter.
The news follows a similar announcement that e-bikes are coming back to San Francisco, after a couple battery fires put those bikes out of service, too.

Citi Bike says it has redesigned the bikes’ brake setup, and is now working with a different battery supplier.
We expect to initially launch several hundred e-bikes this winter and will gradually ramp up to a larger fleet,” Citi Bike said in a blog post. “We’re sorry for the delay and appreciate your patience.”

The latest addition to Lime’s turf and the one that put a pin in company’s sixth continent is Cape Town, South Africa. Lime didn’t provide an exact date for the Cape Town expansion, saying only that it would be in “early 2020.”

In addition to Cape Town, Lime has also announced that it will begin operations in Abu Dhabi in the coming weeks.
The United Arab Emirates will be Lime’s third launch in the Middle East following the company’s rollout last year in the two Israeli cities of Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan.

Wheels, an electric bike-share startup with operations in half a dozen US cities, has redesigned its two-wheeled vehicle to include a special spot to hold a helmet. The helmet is locked to the rear rack of the bike and is free for riders to use.
Wheels says that magnetic Reed sensors in the bike “recognize when the helmet is being used.” And the company is offering riders a 20 percent discount for using the helmet to first-time customers.

Researchers calculated that there were 20 individuals injured per 100,000 e-scooter trips taken during a three-month period in Austin, Texas. As scooter companies grow, the need to ensure that customers are taking their own safety into account has become a central challenge.

It makes sense that fewer people ride scooters in the winter, when they’re exposed to the cold, wind, and snow, than in the summer when the sun is out and the weather is warm. Winter also poses operational challenges for scooter companies, which have to work harder to maintain their fleets and keep a close eye on when conditions are too dangerous to provide the service safely.

Certain Silicon Valley competitors are less determined to plow through winter. Bird, based in sunny Santa Monica, told Quartz it is pausing operations [...] “Safety is the number one priority at Bird, and while our scooters have been tested for all conditions we’ve decided to pause,” Bird spokesman Harry Porter said in an email.
San Francisco-based Lime, which operates in more than 120 cities around the world, has chosen to suspend service for the season in places with “harsh weather conditions” [...]
