Beware! New Android Malware Hacks Thousands of Facebook Accounts

A new Android trojan has been found to compromise Facebook accounts of over 10,000 users in at least 144 countries since March 2021 via fraudulent apps distributed through Google Play Store and other third-party app marketplaces.

Dubbed "FlyTrap," the previously undocumented malware is believed to be part of a family of trojans that employ social engineering tricks to breach Facebook accounts as part of a session hijacking campaign orchestrated by malicious actors operating out of Vietnam, according to a report published by Zimperium's zLabs today and shared with The Hacker News.

Although the offending nine applications have since been pulled from Google Play, they continue to be available in third-party app stores, "highlighting the risk of sideloaded applications to mobile endpoints and user data," Zimperium malware researcher Aazim Yaswant said.

Zimperium: FlyTrap Android Malware Compromises Thousands of Facebook Accounts

Just like any user manipulation, the high-quality graphics and official-looking login screens are common tactics to have users take action that could reveal sensitive information. In this case, while the user is logging into their official account, the FlyTrap Trojan is hijacking the session information for malicious intent.

Meta is warning Facebook users about hundreds of apps on Apple and Google’s app stores that were specifically designed to steal login credentials to the social network app. The company says it’s identified over 400 malicious apps disguised as games, photo editors, and other utilities and that it’s notifying users who “may have unknowingly self-compromised their accounts by downloading these apps and sharing their credentials.” According to Bloomberg, a million users were potentially affected.

This is proof that even official app stores or so called ''walled gardens'' aren't a bulletproof solution to protect against malicious apps. I mean this is quite a serious hack, especially because many people probably don't use 2FA. How the heck weren't they able to spot this sooner, shame on Google and Apple! Now that I think of it, this shouldn't have been posted in this thread, since iOS was also affected.
