I agree. I had given up on it a couple of years ago, but they seem to be back on track now. I have been using ZoneAlarm Pro 6.0 beta for the past couple of weeks. It works well for me and my level of inexperience in the security area. I am using it along with Dr. Web as the resident AV.

Everyone has a best firewall, but there is no best firewall for everyone.

So, changing the question: What´s the lightest firewall? Zonealarm or Outpost?

    For me, Outpost...

You can also try the great freeware NetVeda Safety.Net that that use much less resources... ;)

The top two choices in the poll Ronjor pointed you to...one on one machine and one on the other. ;)

Its a very competitive marketplace - so, one day it can be one firewall and the next day another, with new releases coming out every week from one competitor or another. Best is relative to a level playing field with all participants getting hammered to see which one rises to the top - and then varies with time. In case of ties, apply ease-of-use and personal preference to decide - or any other criteria which might suit you - to each (h)er/is own.

Checkout http://www.firewallleaktester.com using the Tests link in the left-hand panel to see the results of testing 10 firewalls last October.

And now? What´s the Best? Zonealarm PRO 6 or Outpost 2.7?

I still think outpost is lighter than zonealrm... and the internet connection is faster with outpost...or it´s just imagination?

Best for me: ZoneAlarm Pro. The 6 version is working a lot better than the 5 version did. Also, I can make advanced rules whenever I want to. I'd like an extra layer of protection with an IDS/IPS, but the operating system level protection of ZAP 6 is like an IDS. Plus, KAV 5's IDS works with my version of ZAP (not KAV 6 beta, though.)

Try them both (not at the same time of cousre) and pick the one you like better. I have an even better idea. Try all the firewalls and pick the one you like the best. Just remeber what's low on resources on one computer might not be the same on yours. A good thing to do is wirte down the resources that one firewall takes up and write down what the other ones take up. What I did is worte down the resources for 3 days to see if there was any changes. IMHO I would stay away from Sygate. They seem to be playing aroun d with the users. First it's a lookback issue and now it's some people are having problems with 5.6 (the latest).

Yeah, I believe as a minimum, the firewall must pass (or potential to pass) all leaktests as the link shown above. Outpost_Pro seems to be my choice after using Norton_security_suite for years, and evaluated the latest ZoneAlarm_security_suite and Outpost pro.

The best firewall is the one that will allow the option of advanced rules if you choose to learn more.

I personally think one of the best software firewalls is M$ ISA 2000/2004 which proves M$ can actually produce a decent firewall.

    Very configurable, robust and reliable.

Downside: Requires 2000/2003 Server, reasonably high spec kit and expensive.

When we talked about free firewalls then for me...
For fast broadband users I think it's Zone Alarm and for those using a slow dial-up connections it's Kerio 4.2. ;)

How do you figure that one? Kerio actually offers better protection but is slightly more bloated.

I think there is no best firewall or everyone would be using it. There are simply a number of good firewalls and you need to decide which one best suits your requirements. The type of connection you have means little in my view, other than obviously the faster your connection the quicker your machine can be infected and infect others.

Really to me there is no such thing as the best FW, all firewalls or most do their job very well, this goes for Zone Alarm, Kerio, Outpost, Sygate, Look N Stop and many more. All FW's also have their pluses and minuses (good and bad) and at the end of the day its all comes down to personal preference. Plus most important it also depends on your surfing habits.

Why not trial each one like the ones I've mentioned above and see which one suits you the best.

There is no "the best" firewall. For me, Kerio PF 4.2 is more suitable F/W.

And I agree with @yahoo "Everyone has a best firewall, but there is no best firewall for everyone."

On my computer, Kerio 4.2 free works very nicely and doesn't seem resource heavy. It gets my vote as the best for my computer.

On my 7 yr old laptop with Win 98SE I have ZA 2.6, and it still does the job.

Outpost 2.7 & ZAP v 6 both are awesome in terms of protection so both are for me the best out there...
