BBC will revamp iPlayer yet again to create 'total TV'

According to a report in today's Guardian, the next version of iPlayer will go 'beyond channels' as it attempts to fight not only its terrestrial rivals and established streamers like Netflix, but also the raft of new streaming services set to launch next year, from companies like Disney and Discovery.
It will also face competition from its own Britbox joint venture with ITV - because, quite simply, you can only watch one show at once.

Now, it wants to revamp the service yet again. Details are sketchy but it is understood that it will be putting greater emphasis on live content for streaming (ie channel simulcasts and pop-up streams) alongside the wealth of box set and catch up content.

"iPlayer will become the heart of everything we do; the gateway to all our programmes - a ‘total TV' experience, which will bring everything you want from BBC television into one place for the first time," said Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content.
Whether that allows it to gain a foothold alongside its commercial rivals, without peeing off its Britbox partner, ITV or its commercial arm UKTV, remains to be seen.

Auntie Beeb and creepy uncle Sky have announced a plan to bring a full version of BBC iPlayer to Sky customers, in the latest salvo of the streaming wars.

Under the new deal, viewers will be able to access the full iPlayer app, in the same way that Sky's Netflix integration works. It'll be available through the catch-up menu or via the red button on any BBC channel.
The BBC recently announced that it would be dropping news and information from the red button service in favour of additional streams and other programme related fun.

Sky: BBC and Sky agree new content and technology partnership

As part of the wide-ranging partnership, the BBC iPlayer app and connected red-button service will today launch on Sky Q, Sky’s next generation TV platform, offering Sky customers the full BBC iPlayer and red-button experience.
This new collaboration will enable Sky customers to watch BBC programmes via the BBC iPlayer app, by pressing the red button when watching a BBC channel, or through Sky’s integrated catch-up service.

BBC iPlayer stops working on some Samsung TVs

Affected owners are being advised to download a software update.
But the patch does not work on some older models, which will have to wait until next year to get a separate fix.

The BBC has said that it expects thousands, but not tens of thousands, of screens to be unable to use its catch-up service over Christmas as a consequence.
Samsung said the problem had been caused by "security certificates" expiring on Sunday. These are bits of code used to verify that the software on the TVs has permission to access iPlayer's library of content.

"Samsung tell us they are working hard to address the problem with their firmware and any viewers who are experiencing difficulty watching iPlayer on Samsung TVs should contact the manufacturer to get it fixed," said a spokesman.
Those affected face having to buy a third-party dongle or set-top box if they still want to make use of iPlayer on affected TVs in the meantime.
