Around a fifth of all web traffic last year was linked to malicious bot activity, with financial services hit more than any other sector, according to Distil Networks.
The security vendor compiled its 2019 Bad Bot Report from analysis of a global network covering thousands of anonymized domains.

It claimed to have discovered hundreds of billions of “bad bot” requests across this network, enabling large-scale, automated malicious activity including: web scraping, competitive data mining, personal and financial data harvesting, brute-force login and digital ad fraud, spam, transaction fraud and more.

Network traffic in companies is generated by bots almost as much as by humans, shows a recent study. As bots become more sophisticated, they bypass the security challenges in place.
Plenty of automated traffic
Telemetry data from cybersecurity company Radware provides insight into the source of traffic on customer networks, identifying the automated threats as generating 45% of the traffic.
Unwanted traffic
The most prevalent are bots from the "headless browser" category, representing the second generation in bot evolution. Their share of the bad traffic is 46% and they can store cookies and run JavaScript code.

Organizations fighting bad bots should distinguish them from the good bots. While executives and IT professionals in charge with network security may believe that their company can spot and classify bot-generated traffic, the reality seems to contradict them

New research published today by Imperva has found that bad bots made up nearly a quarter of overall website traffic in 2019.
The report was built from data collected from Imperva’s global network and includes hundreds of billions of bad bot requests anonymized over thousands of domains.

According to the 2020 edition of Imperva's annual "Bad Bot" report, in 2019, bad bot traffic rose to its highest ever percentage of 24.1 percent of all traffic. Eerily, 37.2% of all traffic on the internet last year wasn't human.
Researchers noted that bad bot sophistication levels remained consistent for the third year running, with 53.6% of malicious bots being moderately sophisticated, 26.3% simple, and 20.1% sophisticated. Sophisticated bots were found to target marketplaces (28.5%) and the real estate industry (24.5%) most of all.

The high volume and wide variety of bad bots out there makes defending against this malicious threat tricky.
"In some cases, it simply doesn’t make sense that foreign visitors would use a given site, so blocking chunks of foreign IP addresses is good hygiene," wrote researchers.
