For XP Mode to work in Windows 7, you need to enable in BIOS the Virtualization.

Aladdin, sorry if I wasn't clear.

Not going to use XP Mode. I already know that the legacy software I need to use won't work in that way. So I have to truly copy/restore to dissimilar hardware, my old XP drive.

    Just verified:
    • new Win7 system's BIOS is AHCI
    • old XP system to be copied/restored to dissimilar hardware BIOS is IDE
    Now what, my friend? :D

    Hi Chamlin,

[*]new Win7 system's BIOS is AHCI:

You are all set on your Win7 machine as it is using ACHI. Here is the latest Intet RST (RSTL) driver. Make a snapshot with AX64, then install the driver. If it takes, reboot and you should have the latest. If it doesn't then your machine (ASUS) is set for Microsoft ACHI driver. All my ASUS machines, three of them have the Intet RST (RSTL) driver on them:

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=2101&DwnldID=23496&lang=eng&iid=dc_rss

It is the third download from the top.

[*]old XP system to be copied/restored to dissimilar hardware BIOS is IDE:

The above is tricky. I believe you have mentioned before it is XP SP3, so I am assuming it is 32 bits (x86) system. As for 64 bits (x64), the XP went up to only SP2. Is my assumption correct here?

Now on the same above download, you will see the first download is called, "f6flpy-x64.zip' and the second download is called, "f6flpy-x86.zip". These are the ACHI drivers on floppy disk to be injected in XP during the initial install. But your XP is already installed as IDE and not ACHI. If you redeploy your old XP machine to the new Win7 machine it will BSOD.

So, make two image backups of your old XP machine, with both AX64 and Macrium Reflect Free and then we will modify the registry to accept ACHI. But I am not sure if we can test it in your old XP machine.

Does your old old XP machine has settings in BIOS for both IDE and ACHI?

    Best regards,

    Mohamed

    Chamlin,

I'm curious. Why the hourly backup of your OS?
Once you've installed and set it, it should be good to go.
Patch Tuesday happens once a month.
Consequently, a monthly backup would seem sufficient to me.
Unless you're really installing, uninstalling programs with gusto which I doubt, a monthly still seems sufficient. For the one or two you may add/delete, the next month's backup will catch them.
If something happens, not that much of a headache to just reinstall.

    What am I missing?

    Hi MistOR,

AX64 is two programs in one:

    1. It is imaging program like Macrium Reflect, Acronis and so forth.
    2. It is snapshot program like Rollback Rx.

Due to snapshot technology, AX64 does automatic incremental (snapshot) hourly backup and then automatic merging.

And it only takes a few seconds to do (12, in my case), so why not?

Oh, Mohamed. After all this, my XP system is freaking out, not getting past the initial XP boot up (black screen). Am operating in Safe Mode, and just finished transferring all the data to the new Win 7 system.

I'm clear at this point, that I'm going to:
    1. Attempt to get my legacy software working in XP Mode on the new system; and if that doesn't work...
    2. Use the spare drive on the new system and do a clean XP install, then install the legacy software.

I'd rather option 1 works as that would free up the drive and I could avoid the Easy Boot up scenarios...especially now that with AX64's new version 1 4 0 19 able to show up on the boot up screen.

Not sure whether to install that version or to go up to 1 3 7 until ISSO resolves some of the restore instability people seem to be seeing. Your thoughts?

    Thanks.

As another poster said, why not?
    I'm just a disc miser, I guess. :)
