ubuntu tweak a great tool for ubuntu and setting unity if you dont want it you can use same setting from compiz setting manager tool from control center (also note CSM is needed to install ubuntu tweak)

    :D

if you notice backlight toggles option you can do many things from size to edge elluminate ....etc

when you set it from default to something else like for example backlight toggles it give only open applications a backlight this way you know which apps are open ...... try different setting have fun.

edit one thing more i like to add the above icon theme they dont make huge difference but icons themes like these

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2049329&postcount=822

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2049379&postcount=824

    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2049406&postcount=825

    etc

without backlight default on instead its set to off or edge illumination toggle or some other

then you get the real looks

if you notice them correctly you see all of them i set to

    edge illumination toggle option

you only see a it on edge (boundary layer) and because of that option icons looks like glassy (transparent kinda)

    or

else if backlight on (which is default set option)

    they look UG like this
