Avira uses an important IT technology trade show (CEBIT). For most Europeans involved with ICT it is the largest event of the year. Because it is a German based trade show, Avira uses this event (first week of March) for free publicity.

It will therefore launch new version (V10) at this time of the year (March).

This date is smart, because other AV companies fish for the same attention when they release their new home user version before christmas. With so many new 2010 releases, the smaller companies have a hard time in getting free publicity. Also I think Avira is more directed to business than home users, so they will have little benefit of the Christmas sales effect.

Is beta 1 pretty stable? I may give it a try as it seems very intriguing. I have used Avira premium av and free in the past but always had some sort of driver issue with my Vista desktop computer. I hope v 10 will be different.

is this new beta version lighter then avira version 9 ? or does it run heavier ?

the new version looks good except that they changed the GUI , they shouldn't done that because all that use avira like the GUI version that is in ver9

I think it has too much contrast between black and white. On the left its too dark to read easy. After that if you look to the right you need sunglasses  First time i dont like aviras GUI.

i really dont see it, but ive set the contrast levels on my monitor down anyways since my eyes hurt from having the contrast up on anything, i keep somewhat low contrast levels and low brightness already.

I installed the beta today. Version 3. I really like the interface. It is polished from V9, but it is almost the same. I could manage around all settings right away.

The proactive guard. Is that some kind of a HIPS?

The only thing I think avira should do different is the spam module. I wish they could integrate theire spam module into the email client. And support the "big" clients like outlook, thunderbird, windows mail, outlook express.

The first 10 beta-testers (those submitting the most bugs) received a prize last year.
I was one of them :)

Maybe they'll give something this year too.

Okay northern hemisphere spring that is, but they release before march to get free publicity for the CEBIT, I am willing to bet a few of my unused lisences for it.

This Beta has impressed me so far.Running on an XP VM I gave up trying to get infected after about 25 malicious links. In fact that's my main criticism with Avira 10,it's a spoilsport and completely ruined my fun.:p

Did the behaviour guard(or whatever it's called) detect some of them,or that's not implemented yet...?

Actually the Webguard detected all but one of the links (all less than 48 hours old). The one .exe that was able to run was picked up by the signature detection.I don't think the behaviour guard has been fully implemented as yet although I intend to throw some more malware at this over the weekend so I'll post back if it is working.

but how if i install avira10 without webguard because maybe it slow down some websites and i have low DSL , will it still protect me as good against thoese websites files inside the website ?

    so avira10 is lighter then version9 ?

It should be just the same without the Webguard running in terms of detection,it's just the point at which the malware is detected that differs as far as I'm aware.I have to say that during my unscientific testing I didn't detect any noticeable slowdown with it running, even on content rich sites such as Youtube.

It certainly feels very light indeed so far,as to whether the behavior guard will cause any lag, once fully implemented, that waits to be seen.

no it isn't the same.you can try it if you want. webguard will detect more then the normal guard (proaktiv could detect the rest, but i wouldn't be sure).
the webguard does work with blacklist to block known malware sources automatically. So it protects you even if there are new variants which avira does not detect by heuristics or signatures.

I would be interested to see what extra protection the Webguard affords since opinions are divided here on Wilders as to to merits of these guards in general.I've always been of the opinion that if they don't make web surfing a throwback to the days of dial-up then it can't hurt to enable them.

Also they can be of benefit to users that visit compromised sites,or with generally risky surfing habits.Although the general scanner may well pick up any malware,in these days of multiple tabbed browsing, the user may not associate it with a particular site whereas the Webguard just blocks it saving the user from themselves.
